I got a Canon Powershot G9. Now I wanna get some lenses to use with that camera, and heard that I need a lensadapter to use lenses. Now I found two lenses in my house that where used in a very old camera (from the 80s). Are there any lensadapters that I can use to attach these lenses to my camera?

I made some pics of both lenses: http://img397.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=lens013.jpg

The Lensadaptor is for fitting the wide angle or teleconvertors made especially for the G9 it doesn't allow fitment of any old lens, and as rob said why would you want to

What you have are two lenses for an SLR camera. Looks like M42 mount. Probably your best bet would be to buy the canon G9 lens adaptor which will at least let you attach filters e.g. circular polarisers, and put the old lenses on auction site! Probably won't get much for them as they are pretty low quality lenses.

asim, yes you can get add on lenses. However these add on lenses will be designed to work with the optics of the built in lens. The lenses the OP has are not designed to be used as add on lenses to a point and shoot with a built in lens. Even if the OP could fit them I'd hazard a guess that the results would be disappointing.

They are interchangeable when you buy two or more add-on lenses.
Huh? By its very nature an add-on lens is interchangeable but that's not what is meant when you say 'interchangeable lens'. Unless like a SLR, you remove the entire lens (effectively to the sensor) and stick another on, then it's not interchangeable.

Why isn't it an "interchangeable lens"?

  1. It focuses light, therefore it's a lens.
  2. You can buy 2, one wide-angle and one telephoto, hence they become interchangeable.
EDIT: A lens is a lens, whether it's my nikon 55-200 with several elements, or my mums glasses with just a pair of elements.

I think the pint being made is those lenses won't be of any use to add onto the G9 as they're not designed to be used with a point and shoot.
And it's not interchangeable because you don't change the primary lens, you mealy add-on to it. Interchangeable implies you remove the entire lens system and add a different one.

Are you just trying to be funny or are you serious?

If the latter, wow, just wow.

Of course I'm serious. The G9 has a single, fixed lens, that cannot be interchanged. Adding a screw-on auxiliary lens doesn't change that.

Yes, the auxiliary lenses are interchangeable, but that doesn't escape the fact that "interchangeable lens" has an established definition in photography that the G9 doesn't meet by any stretch of the imagination. It's not even a pedantic point: applying "interchangeable lens" to a camera that doesn't have them is confusing in the extreme, especially for someone new to photography who will think their camera does something it doesn't.
