have just googled your problem and it appears that the lens may need cleaning, failing that its probably new drive time unfortunately.

To be honest it doesn't sound like a driver/software related issue to me (although its best to try all possibilities)

I get the SATA versions - linky basically the same but SATA instead of IDE

Can you still read original CD / DVDs ok?

Have you checked that the tab for using the In Built XP CD Writing Software has not been disabled?

Right Click in CD Drive within My Computer and select properties, select the recording tab and check its enabled.

Thats odd, I don't have an XP PC with a DVD-RW / CD-RW to check but is there nothing else in there for recording / writing related?
