Finished with DG834N, need a new modem/router?

Howdy,

I've had 2 DG834N routers now, both have died on me after 3 weeks of use, so when I get my next RMA (brand new and sealed) I'm gonna chuck it straight on the bay for someone to have it who it will work for.

So I will need a new modem/router, just want some recommendations really. As I don't do anything special with my internet connection, it just needs to be reliable and trustworthy... and if I had to pick something special about it, ideally it would have a good wireless range (doesn't have to be super fast).

Although I've had troubles with the DG834N, I still like netgear, as my old DG834 is still going to this day, so I'm not opposed to another Netgear if anyone wants to recommend one of those (as long as its not a DG834N of course).

need anymore info? As mentioned above, just looking for a trustworthy relaible wireless modem/router.

If your DG834 is still up to the task why don't you just save your money and continue to use that? Or do you want some of the newer 802.11n wireless technologies?

Maybe just pick up a newer DG834GT on a certain popular auction site for a few quid?

Perhaps try a DGN2000, cheaper than the DG834N and probably does just as much.
 
Sorry, although the DG834 is still working, its old skool now, and also it don't have wireless, and I want a wireless modem/router, opposed to bolting a wireless router on to my DG834, so I need to upgrade.

I was looking at the DG834GT so thats one recommendation for that.

I suppose the real question I'm asking is what brand have the best reputation when it comes to modems/routers and networking in general? For example, the Belkin N1 Vision modem/router looks smart, but its Belkin, and they are a bit sucky right?
 
For ADSL routeres Netgear generally do well as they use brodcom modem chipsets which typically get better/more reliable sync than other brands.

DrayTek would be my preference if you don't care about the cost, or a Cisco 871W but both of those probably provide you with more features than you need.

So yes IMO for a good cheap reliable ADSL router the DG834G/GT are pretty good choices, although at £60 on special offer the DGN2000 could be worth a punt as it will give you the newer wireless stuff.
 
Ok cool, I think I will stick with Netgear... and looking at them, I think the DG834PN is better than the DG834GT for me as it has a better coverage.

However, not including the price, what is the best overall router (has the best coverage) out of the DG834PN and the DGN2000? It worries me slightly that the DGN2000 is newer, yet its cheaper than the other 2 older models?

Personally wouldn't buy the PN just as it is exactly that, pre-n spec.

Wouldn't believe the marketing ******** about coverage this that etc.

My Cisco Aironet 1200 with a pair of 9dBi antenna on it covers better than any consumer wireless thing I've ever seen and that is just down to the fact it has a decent radio transmitter in it with sufficient power.

So my advice would be to go for the DGN2000 based on the fact that it is newer and less likely to have any funny hardware niggles like a Pre-N might. It's also black so looks a lot better and will go faster as a result!

I went for the DGN2000 from ocuk, but I am RMAing tomorrow cos that has its own fault. I cannot setup the LAN IP Configuration, I tell it all the correct MAC Addresses and initially it will work, then subsequent reboots and it decides it either doesn't want to allocate the correct ip, or worse, my pc doesn't even find the router.

I have now, officially lost all faith in Netgear, and won't be going for a Netgear next time... dunno what modem to get next, but I'll have to see I suppose.
 
I managed to get a BT Home Hub 2.0 from BT for free just to give that a go, and I have been using it for 3+ days now and it seems to do the trick nicely, does everything I want and hasn't caused me any major problems as of yet (touch wood).

So I'll be sticking with that for now. I didn't have a clue what other router to buy though, I have always used Netgear and nothing else, so going else where was tricky cos I don;t know whos good and who isn't. I liked the top spec Belkin N1 Vision, but I hear Belkin are a bit sucky, so I avoided that, and the Linksys models seems a bit naff at the moment.

If this BT hub causes me grief, then I'll have to investigate again... but so far so good with this one.
 
Fingers crossed then. I thought the BT models were custom Netgear's, unless it's just the monolith look that made me think that.
