Bikecam and stuff help pls

Well its getting that time to put the Tuono back on the road (Yes im a fair weather rider :P ) . It will need a service and new tyres so im selling my first born to sort that out but to the main question!!

I bought some random cctv camera stuff from ebay about a year ago . about 7 cams of various types and a personal recorder (has a 4" screen and sd card slot) Now i was gonna buy one of those bikecam type things but after having a look at the stuff i have i can quite easily make a cam setup on the bike with the gear i already have .

Now atm the recorder has its own battery but it does not hold a great charge ..and the cams can take 9-12v and the recorder 5v . I need to fashion a lead that takes power from the battery that gives me 5v and 10ish volts stable and clean .

Now i had a google and just using a resistor does not seem to be enough and lots of talk of 7880 trannys ets and heatsinks etc ... I can buy a lead that does what i want but its £25 (25 quid more than i have ) so ocuk tell me how i can get a clean hard wired 5v and 10(ish)v perm supply to the 2 devices .

5V is easy, go buy an in-car charger for a USB phone from tesco. probably cost you £5. Takes 12v, gives 5v.

10v will be a little more involved.. i'll have a think
 
The camera can take 12v but must be clean . Battery should give 12-13.8 but can spike hence why i am unwilling to run camera direct to battery . People say it works fine but can kill them over time .

I would make a little box with a 5v and 10v regulator in... I doubt those items get very hot but you would prolly need a small heatsink (one shared one maybe)

Even easier buy a little metal box and use the box itself as the sink and bolt the regulators to the inside of it..

Also put a smoothing cap (1000uF would prolly do) on the output of each... though thats optional as you have a pretty smooth DC input anyway.

Regulators are really easy to wire up though, they just have 3 connections, input, ground and output.


edit: LM7805 reg handles up to 1A (with heatsink), there is also a 7810 reg for 10v you can buy.

resistor voltage drop method won't give a steady output because your input voltage varies as bike revs, and as the load current changes on the devices the voltage will also swing. (resistor would also get VERY hot) ... you could couple resistor with a zener diode, but may as well just use a IC reg.


prolly other ways but my electronics skills abit rusty..

If your device doesn't draw much power then you can get away with using a linear regulator like these. Just be aware that they burn off any excess voltage so are quite inefficient.
The 5V regulator, for example, will waste the remaining 7V. ie. 7/12ths of the input power.

If your kit does need a decent amount of juice then you should be able to build a simple DC-DC converter that does the job far more efficiently. That high street electronics component place should be able to advise.
 
cam only needs like 300 ma ... recorder im not sure but guessing 1/2 amp so not a lot of load...Just dont wanna fy it :P
