Hi guys!

Do please move this thread if I put it in the wrong place I wasn't sure where to post it!

Anyhow I was just wondering, now that technology has had time to mature - what it would take to get crysis running smooth @ 1920x1200. I just recently upgraded to a 4870X2 from a 8800GTX and in all honesty I am a little dissapointed. I game on a 24" Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP and the native res is 1920x1200.

Most games lose significant FPS when I switch to this res. For example, if I turn Oblivion and Crysis down to 1680x1050 the FPS almost doubles. It's crazy! The whole point of me buying the card was to smooth out games in these kinds of resolutions! My understanding of this is that the games in question are GPU limited right? So maybe a second 4870X2 would sort it out?

I've just started playing Crysis (it was too laggy to play in the 8800GTX days) and I LOVE it - but I really want >30fps at this res with 2x AA if possible! I am running Vista 64 although -DX9 Crysis to help FPS with the following:

ASUS P5K-E Wifi
Intel Core2Duo E8400 @ 4.40Ghz (987x9)
4GB OCZ Reaper 8500 @ 975Mhz
Samsung Spinpoint 750GB F1
Powercolor 4870X2 @ stock
M-AUDIO Delta 66
Custom WCing

Thanks for taking the time to read this guys!

Hello Tom,

I've got TWO GTX8800 in sli, and it runs Crysis fine at 1920x1200, i don't use AA/AF though, as I think it looks good enough anyway....

I've no experience with the GTX 295, but I think that's the Card you need for Crysis (to run "smoother" that is,- as this game likes Nvidia cards better i heard - aint cheap though (you know that of course:)) Is it Crysis original or the "warhead" version?

4870X2 is a super fast card though, and i bet it's only this game that struggles....and this game only, however...............

EDIT: your best listening to someone with the same card you have though, and see what drivers, settings they use.

I completed both Crysis and Crysis Warhead @ 1920x1200, 4xAA, and it ran pretty smoothly when I had my 4870X2.

If you're absolutely desperate for more performance maybe a GTX295 would be in order.

Lets face it crysis is the worst technically designed game ever, You can have 2 of the most powerful cards on the market and it barely makes a difference to the framerate. I've tried playing the game a few times but it just gives me a headache. Maybe if I get really drunk or dose myself up with painkillers I'll be able to complete it lol.

What i read (again:), I don't think it's the small Frames you gain from the 4870x2 to the GTX295, but the higher Average, higher minimum, better smothness etc. But like i said,,i've not tried the GTX295.

Did you do a fresh install and remove all Nvidia drivers?,

Would Crossfiring another 4870X2 not make any difference then you lot reckon?

I don't really have the cash to spank on a GTX 295 :o(

I've had the 4870X2 a couple of months but only just got round to playing Crysis (original) l;ast couple of days. I have formatted several times haha as I upgraded to Vista 64.

But you've got enough to splash on a second 4870x2 that may or may not improve matter greatly.
Turn AA down a bit and leave it at that :p (I played through Crysis on an 8800GTS 640MB in a 1440x900 window on Medium, and I liked it fine)

I would just keep the 1 4870x2 tbh crysis is a very demanding game ( to demanding ) and tbh does'nt matter what gfx card you have crysis will still eat if for breakfast

My 4870x2 runs crysis superbly @ 1920x1200 ?! Easily 35-40 fps, check your drivers etc something sounds amiss to me.

Well it's about as smooth as 35-40 fps to begin with but within 10 mins the perf dies quite rapidly. Memory leak perhaps?

Anyhow I am a little worried tbh. I have 9.2 already with Catalyst A.I set to standard, AA on application setting and AF on 16x forced. All settings to high apart from shadows to medium in crysis itself and I dont get the performance you guys are talking about?

I wonder whats up? Might it be a subjective thing of what we each call 'playable'?

Many thanks!

Tom

EDIT: I would also re-itterate to you guys that the difference in performance between 1680x1050 and 1920x1200 is literally huge. I know some wise ass is gonna say why dont I use the former but I game on 24" - ie I want native mofos!

If you open up the exe in Notepad, you'll see a line about 1/3 down that says something like "IF GPU(0).VENDOR <> "NVIDIA" THEN FRAMERATE = 0.5 * FRAMERATE. Comment this out, and it will be all fine.

I have run crysis on high at 1900 x 1200 and got 40 to 55 fps and its as smooth as a nut..thats with 2x4870's in crossfire....sounds like something is not quite right with your set-up

I believe this is all you need to get Crysis running at your desired settings.

Seriously though, there isn't a card yet that can run Crysis maxed out (inc AA, AF and Vsync) at 19x12, at least not at a constant 30+ fps.

Even in the latter levels with AA and AF applied? The game drops into the teens on the ice levels running on my 4870 x2 maxed at 19x12, it does on my gtx280 too, although less frequent than the x2.
