As above, it´s pretty simple, got an HP charger for 20 quid or so, worked brilliantly for about 10 days and tonight popped and stopped working. It´s clearly overheated, the plastic casing has warped and it was still hot easily 15 minutes after it happened.
Do I have any rights vis a vis a refund or replacement? I know it´s a cheapo alternative but you really don´t expect it to just stop working after ten days.

Many thanks :)

was it brand new and do they have a return policy.

if it was 2nd hand, you have no rights. it worked when you received it.
Also if it was from another country you probably don't have any rights.

What happened to your old charger? Did it explode too?

Check the listing or contact the seller and find out about their return/exchange policy for starters.

If it's not BS kitemark stamped, does the buyer have the right to complain that it is not fit for sale legally in the UK if the seller doesn't play ball?

http://electricstuff.co.uk/acadapter.html - don't buy AC adapters from ebay!

anyway, your best chance of a refund is to contact the seller saying that you'll tell ebay he's selling goods that are illegal in the UK - this is most likely to get you a refund. don't accept a replacement, it'll be just as bad.

then you'll need to buy another AC adapter. best way of doing this is by searching for the AC-adapters model# on the "jungle-river" website. when the AC adapter for my toshiba died, i bought a new one from a "marketplace" seller on there and it's a real, toshiba-brand unit. it cost ~£40

One thing I have learnt is never to buy generic chagers or anything like that, although they seem cheap they are usually REALLY crap.

I got a pair of Walkman earphones and adaptor, you know for the mobile and they were generic not OEM/BRANDED like the seller said or pictured. After about 4 days only one phone worked and then I got crackling. Oh BTW, the seller gave me the refund.

So if your buying a charger or something along them lines it might be a good idea to spend a little more on something OEM, even if it's used.

But I am sure some people have never had a problem.

My crappy phone chagers for nokia and motorola that cost pennies on ebay both work great, but I've heard stories about overheating dodgy chargers before. In this case I would at least want a refund, but I wouldn't want a replacement if it was the same charger.
