Why do we all make such a fuss out of St.Patricks day....

exactly....
I'm American. I have a [lame] excuse for not knowing. ;)

To answer the original question, however, it seems it is because there is some dispute as to the validity of St. George's affiliation with England:

On the other hand, there have also been calls to replace St George as patron saint of England, on the grounds that he was an obscure figure who had no direct connection with the country.
I'm not sure how accurate that is and what difference it should make regarding a celebration. We don't have a patron saint in the U.S. as far as I know, but there is a lot of Irish heritage and culture here, so we choose to celebrate.

Like I said, it's just another excuse to party.

No, English people moan on forums about other nationalities having a good time ;)

most brits i know have a good time on st patricks day too...

but you wont see many people donning english flags on st georges day because of a perceived stigma attached..

sad but true.

19, and as i said I'm talking from MY experience.

I have 3 Irish friends

All 3 were born in England yet class themselves as irish.
All support Irish football/rugby teams.
All hold an Irish passport
All dislike the English
All live here.

As i say, my experience.

It's not nonsensical, it's called opinion.

Right, so you think an entire nation of people are anti English because you have 3 friends who were born in England and consider themselves Irish, and they dislike the English but they're friends with you. Jesus wept.

So wrong.

My argument is why don't we celebrate a day that has reference to us BRITS in contrast to a day celebrated by a country who decided to become Independent from Britain.

It does not have reference to BRITS, as you put it. It has relevance to English. Get it right.

My single reason for dislikeing "them"

yet they come over here for work etc and still dislike england..

That's my experience too, constantly talking about how wonderful Ireland is and how it is superior to England yet....

They all come over here to work and STILL have the cheek to slate us.

Jesus you're a retard.

FROM MY EXPEREINCE

No, i don't think an entire nation are anti-english based on that.

Personally I'd rather see the efforts go in to St.Georges day seeing as 99% of the Irish dislike the English, at least from my experience.

99% of the Irish dislike the English in your experience eh? And your experience is from 3 people you know. That is retarded.

99% of the Irish people I've met, yea..

Of course I've met more than 3, I'm 1/4 Irish... and my mum is 1 of 8 so go figure.

I was using my 3 friends as an example...

english people are ashamed.

I agree.
Or else we aren't allowed to celebrate it as it probably offends some people somewhere or other.
It's ironic as in Spain they make a bigger deal than we do about San Jordi (st george's)

I for one shall be celebrating St. Georges!

I can see this thread going downhill very quickly.

And to be fair - It started terrribly.

I class myself as Irish - although I was born in England - my parents are Irish.... and I have been living in Ireland for the last 20 years.

And to be honest - there are very few people here that 'Hate' the English. And I did find that when I lived in England - English people are usually ashamed to admit/celebrate a lot of stuff associated with their nationality for some reason - but embrace other days easily.
