Rubbish sofa - replace, repair or fight for a refund?

When I bought my flat 8 months ago, I needed all the furniture to go in it so I bought the cheapest sofa I could find that looked OK. It was a £399 job from DFS.

Recently, the cushions have been sagging quite a lot, they've lost a lot of their "bounce" and seem to have shrunk (dont meet in the middle ). The frame is also creaking quite badly, so badly you can feel it sometimes.

I wouldnt mind something a bit bigger given a chance, so should I -

- Stick it in the freeads, get a bit of money for it and buy something better quality
- Go to DFS and get them to sort it under warranty. I cant imagine them doing much easily though...
- Argue with them and try and get some of my money back to put towards a new one?

The sensible thing would be to get it fixed/replaced, but I'm sure its just going to happen again in 8 months time....Has anyone had similar experiences with DFS?

I would say get DFS to sort it, but as you said, it will probably happen again in a few months time, if you like the look/style of the sofa then it's worth giving it another bash, if your cushions are sagging though you can get little roll out... errr... things that kinda re-enforce the... errr... springy bit.

I quite like the style, although I wouldnt mind something bigger if I had the chance. Its a 3 seater but a 2 cushion one, its not quite long enough to stretch out on...

Could anyone elaborate on roll out things? :)

Is there much of a market for these things? Thinking I could get DFS to replace the cushions and sell it on, but would anyone buy it?

This is what I was talking about;

Looks like they're called "sofa supports" or "sofa savers".

I'm not sure that would do the job as its not the springs that have gone - the cushions have just lost their bounce and gone all floppy

OIC... This might be a stupid question, but are you sure the cushions have actually shrunk and it's not just that the sofa is sagging and creating a gap?

Difficult to tell, it could be both I suppose. The cushions definitely arent as bouncy as they were to start with, but it could also be sagging too I guess...

If I do end up replacing it, what sort of money should I be spending to get something that would last me 4 or 5 years? Would 1k do it?

I'm not really qualified to answer that question as it's really not what you spend, it's where you spend it and what on, and I have no recommendation for you I'm afraid.

Lol, very true. I didn't take any finance or warranties on it....which, in retrospect was probably worse as they must bump up the cost of the sofas to cover the interest

I'm not really sure why you're asking this. It's only eight months old, go back to the company you bought it from and get them to deal with it. It was obviously not fit for purpose.

Got our sofas from DFS, being as we needed a greaet deal of sofa (2x 4-seaters with corner units, a chair and a puffe) and there was a problem with the arms on one after a few months. The repair man was out in a few days and fixed it straight off, no fuss, cost a cuppa and that's it. Phone them and make them fix.

The sale of goods act states that goods must be of 'merchantable quality' which basically covers you for 12 months.

The problem is, a lot of it is probably perception. Its definitely less comfortable than it used to be (i know get backache from it) and the squeaking is intermittent
