Put my GTI-6 into MOT at Robins and Day in Preston last Tuesday. Reason being they were cheap to have my tyres fitted and balanced, and MOT was only £30 so thought why not.

Expected it to pass with advisorys for low rear pads and slight blow on the exhaust as the clamp on the back was crap but it only slightly blew.

They failed it on:

Headlight bulbs wrong colour £21 to replace.
Headlight alignment wrong. £18 to align.
Rear brake discs and pads need replacing as scored/pitted and pads low £170+
Both front shocks seriously leaking, £460

Advised me of:

Front brake discs scored and pitted.
Front wipers smear the windscreen.
Backbox rusting.
Exhaust slight blow where centre meets backbox.

And a couple more besides.

The brake discs were obviously scored/pitted as ive not driven the car since I bought it and its sat there all winter, did my best to give the brakes a work out on the drive to the garage but not enough to remove all the rust which had built up! Surpise suprise the fronts are now completely fine after a few miles of driving!

So I booked an MOT for this morning at the garage ive used previously who is sound.

Bought new rear pads and discs, fitted them in an hour on the drive last night, fair enough the rear pads were low, but as long as they passed a handbrake/braking efficiency I didnt think it mattered.

Fitted two different headlight bulbs (couldnt see a problem with the others!).

Passed with 1 advisory for blowing exhaust this morning, didnt even advise me of the shocks, there is a very slight misting if that on them.

I used the car this weekend gone to go visit my friend in Peterborough. Now on the motorway I noticed bad vibration through the wheel at 70-90mph.

It got worse, so on the Sturday had them looked at today in Peterborough at Apex tyres.

They only put weights on the inside of the wheels, the rears were balanced wrong using too many weights.

The front wheels the weights had come off, which explains what the metallic noise of something hitting the underside of the car was on the drive home from having it fail MOT there, first time I went around a bend at more than 5mph the first of 3 wheel weights flew off the car...

Went in today and after explaining what happened I asked for my money back they charged me for fitting my tyres.

Followed by the guy on the desk saying, er I think XXXX can do it, goes out and talks to him.

No Service Manager Paul Livsey has to do it, goes off. Oh hes not in at the moment, can I get him to call you. Writes down my numbers and leave him with the recipt for getting my tyres sorted elsewhere.

Leave him my work mobile and work landline number. No call all afternoon so phone back at half 4 and speak to him.

And speaking to him now on the phone, he isnt prepared to refund the £28 it cost me to have my tyres rebalanced elsewhere as they wouldnt charge that and I had them rebalanced in Peterborough 5 days later, and as I took my car away after failing MOT there he wouldnt know what happened to it between then and now. He would partially refund me but not the full amount as they wouldnt charge that much. I replied with well what if I phone around and get some prices from ATS/Quick Fit etc (knowing they will be about £10 a tyre). And added that they can charge what they want, they charged £170 to fit two rear brakes but it doesnt cost that much. Balancing tyres is about 30p of lead plus whatever they want to charge to cover the costs.

We have never had a wheel weight come off before blah blah, they only balance what the machine said. Funny how the other garage showed me and they were way out of balance and needed weights on both the inside and the outside.

Glad it wasnt in person would have been close to punching him in the chops.

Anyone find me Robins and Day UK services phone number, cant be bothered to deal with that backside again, rather just go over his head.

This is why main peugeot dealers are usually crap with the older pugs, many of the monkeys were in nappies when they sold new. Next time find an independant on the forum :)

CG Cars in Leicester, but its a bit of a trek just to have an MOT done.

Will get my cambelt done there but I thought just for an MOT and some wheel balancing, what can go wrong.

Just want my ruddy money back for the wheels, but the service manager was an arse.

Are the headlight bulbs BS approved or just some cheap fleabay ones? If they are approved, ten your dealer is talking pants.

£18 for turning a screw? 4 screws at most? Tell them to GTFO

£460 for two front shocks? I think you have made a typo there. You mean £46 each? Right???

Rear brake shoes and discs cost £26 for EBC greenstuff and £16 for the Disks, so where they have gotten that figure from is totally hilarious.

I would write a letter of complaint to them and one to trading standards informing them of the situation you find yourself in thanks to their incompetance. I would ask the garage that did do your tyres to write a short note about what they found. It doesn't need to be a bible, just a short factual statement. Include this with the correspondence.

Advise that Robins and Day have 14 days to reimburse you or you will issue proceedings. Don't put emotion into it, just simple statements of fact.

write to Pug UK HQ;i did it with honda about a flagship dealer and they subsidised £2,000 of equiopment to £450.

Thats what you get for taking it to a dealers, my local "Justmot's" is 10quid for an MOT at the moment and since they don't do any repairs they don't tuck you up like all dealers and garages, they even adjusted my lights for free so it would pass :D

I'll never take my S2000 back to a dealers again, I would rather take it to more knowledgeable independants and specialists, who know FAR MORE than dealers about the car they are working on. I wouldn't trust any Honda dealer with my car, much rather work on it myself, least I'll take care over it and do a far better job!

Agreed.

I use "Cheadle test Centre" in Staffordshire as they also do no repairs and simply test the car to MOT standards.

Dealers of most varietys will use an MOT as an excuse to generate business as the OP has found to his cost in both money & time.

Sadly, for every driver like the OP who stands up to this shoddy practice, theres many many more who don't which is why the dealers do it.

£46+vat would be about right for OEM quality items, and then fitting on top. £460 is either a complete pee take, or a typo.

Im not bothered about the MOT at the end of the day the test is subjective as to what is lightly worn/worn/heavily worn.

I replaced the rear brakes myself for £45 with OEM replacements from unipart.

The bulbs I replaced for £5 each just incase and then had my local place do it.

And im not joking about the shocks, I assume that price was fitted but Peugeot in Wigan who are a different group quoted me £310 inc VAT for two front shocks and springs. And dont forget the topmounts might be knackered sir so thats £100 more!

Audi are offering free MOTs.

Shame mine just passed its MOT a month or two ago with no problem otherwise I'd be curious to see what rubbish they could make up to sting me for money.

Went in again to see the service manager in person.

He was an arse.

Accused me of lying, the garage I used for the other MOT of removing the wheel weights, saying it was all dodgy that I had a reciept for £28 for getting them rebalanced when they charged me £28 to fit the tyres in the first place. Pointed out that it was £28 inc VAT to balance and his £28 to fit was exc VAT.

Why did I have them done in Peterborough (because thats where I was at the time, no Robins and Day within 50 miles).

Basically said it was incredibly dodgy that I asked them to MOT my car and fit tyres I supplied, then took it elsewhere when they wanted £800 of work done to it and wouldnt see any sense.

Why would I try to get £28 back when I have a valid reciept so its not like im conning them!

He offered me £10 and thats all, £5 per wheel he said. Replied with, well I had 4 wheels balanced so thats £20. Refused and said he would only offer me £10.

So went over and waited for the dealership manager, who was reasonable, didnt lose his temper and wasnt an arse. He listened to my side of the story and then said they would pay £20 to cover the costs of rebalancing which I accepted to just get some closure. Be going at it for days otherwise.

If ill get the cheque which will be in the post remains to be seen.

Moral of the story

ROBINS AND DAY PEUGEOT SERVICE DEPARTMENT PRESTON HAVE TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!

Peugeot main dealers are hillarious, with my 206 they (awful, awful car) wanted £900 to replace the clutch (the estimate was a joke, they charged for some of the parts twice and when I questioned why they made up some ridicilous excuse, I should see if I still have it somewhere and previously they had wanted £300 to replace 1 shock (at the time the shocks were about 40 inc VAT)

I endedup taking my car to a place called Saints in Harrow, they are very honest and miles better, if anyone lives out in West London....
