Surely common sense dictates that if you have kids to protect, you DONT go wading in and escalating something to the next level..
If the people you are protecting really are your prime motivation, you should try and defuse the situation and not get into a fight. If you are knocked out of otherwise incapacitated, theres nobody left to protect your kids....Ditto if you get thrown in jail for being overzealous with the family hammer.

People who break in other peoples homes deserve to get owned. We should adopt laws like in south Africa so you can shoot intruders, ridiculous how the law protects these scumbags who break in, trespass, and nick your stuff...

Adopt laws like SA ? It would lead to utter carnage.
South Africa and the UK are totally different countries in terms of crime, punishment and policing and the self defence laws they have there are not compatable here and they will never likely be.
Need to do something against the scum though. Criminals these days just break in without any fear thinking ''ah they can't hurt me anyways''... The opposite should be true, they should fear for their lives if they are on your property.
And they would not come armed accordingly just in case? - Your point fails.

I worked in a prison looking after 17 year old chav's and you're wrong.
Another thing we were taught on induction was that kids are unlike adults when it comes to violence.
An adult inmate is more likely to hit you once and knock you down where kids are more likely to go into a stamping rage once you're down.
On my induction there were 4 officers from adult prisons who'd come on a transfer and everyone of them asked to go back.
Regardless of how logical and "mature" you are, faced with that situation you may just "react". Especially if its in your own home, which means running away is out of the question. I think if it reaches that stage, asking nicely to go away will do much.
If you really are protecting others, and fear for your own safety/life, then you will use as much force to end it, quickly, for the longer it goes on, the higher the chance of the fight spilling over (people getting thrown about) and hurting others.
It's a very grey area....
Self Defence is the act of defending your's or other's property or person, using minimal reasonable force.
The basic rules are....
Don't hit them on the floor,
Don't hit them in the back
However, if they come at you with a knife and you are "lucky" enough to be able to take the knife from them, if they get fatally wounded during that altercation, it's justifiable in the heat of the moment....providing you get a good jury.
Being woken up in your own home by an intruder, it would be reasonable to feel threatened etc, the problem lies in where the confrontation took place, ie was it in the kitchen or the upstairs hall, if the kitchen, then a "heat of the moment" would apply, if upstairs hall way then why would he have a knife up there, unless it was taken off the little scroat who broke in.... and stabbing the guy 30 odd times wouldn't be a reasonable act in the heat of the moment,
Having experienced just about every form of incarceration I make you Right. DC & YP were Brutal deluxe where as Main was a chilled out affair with the odd kick off. Much more exciting doing DC & YP & just plain boring whilst in Main.

Breaking and entering being consent to being stopped by reasonable force, not consent to being killed? You can have my agreement on that one although you are right it is somewhat disturbing the lack of proportionality shown in some responses.
Being the victim of a burglary is doubtless horrible, you've had your home and possessions invaded, raked through and often ultimately taken away and sold/dumped but this is property - on the other side you've got a human life which is supposed to be the most precious thing there is. Put it this way, I've not seen the European Charter on Property Rights but I've quite well aware of the one for human rights.
Shame on you, you're destroying the stereotype of the Dutch as kooky, liberal, peace-loving beatniks.
Oddly enough that sort of statement reminds me of an ex-flatmate who was Dutch, he was perhaps even more right-wing though, I suspect he'd think you were letting them off too lightly just by shooting them.

But if you regularly ate an apple before you went to sleep & kept said knife in the bedroom for that purpose, Then you would be fine if you picked it up & plunged it into somebodys chest during the heat of the moment, pitch black, Burglar, just woke up etc
Basically the thing to do is to litter your house with "Normal" house hold objects that could be used in defence.
In my own expereince when I heard somebody trying to pinch my motor off my drive I picked up a Hammer on the way out without even thinkng about it. Fortunetly he scarpered as soon s my front door moved & I only got to stand in the middle of the road yawping & waving it. Of course 30 minutes later when I had calmed down I realised exactly what Could have happened to either him or me, All over a car that went long ago
You really do have to way up what is worth more to you some times.
