Universities push for even higher fees

It depends entirely on what degree you do though. Fair enough I'd imagine some people in design could produce work to a high level regardless of whether or not they have a degree. I know for sure though that I couldn't teach myself degree level maths.

Life is soooo hard isn't it... get your priorities in order.

If you cannot manage your bank account I don't see you managing anything else really.

Blame everything else, seems to be the mindset of 90% of people today.

ROFL

Do one you ****ing troll. You haven't got a clue.

While talking about uni I also think it's silly that basic BSc degrees take 3 years. I'd like to see some universities offer fast track degrees in no more than 18 months. Attend uni 9am 'til 5pm, five days a week for 48 weeks a year - like a real job and I'm sure the syllabus could be covered off in half the time.

I wouldnt have gone if it was that expensive. Although maybe I would just have worked a lot harder when I was there if it cost that much to go.

How do american colleges get by, they charge a lot more but if you look at the actual facilities they make our uni look like slums. We cant need to charge 20k a year as necessity.

Maybe for the older people wanting to do a degree, but for the average collage graduate Uni is 50% degree 50% life experience.

The problem is that at least half the Unis in England are completely crap.
REAL degrees at REAL unis should be funded, turd sandwich unis such as Sheffielf Hallam should not be funded as the graduates aren't really worth anything anyway.

Discourage **** degrees.

The government USED to pay for uni, but as any old craphole can call itself a Uni now, many many people are going and just spending 3 years getting drunk.

I mean really what is doing law at Derby actually going to achieve? A checkout at ASDA, thats what.
You will never pay back your student loan anyway doing that.

Fund degrees that are worthwile (obviously needs to be somewhere good!) such as:
Maths
Medicine
Engineering (all areas)
Business Studies
Physics
Chemistry
Law (Law at crapholes does not count)
Etc

Do NOT fund:
Social Sciences (criminology included!)
English
Art
Geography
All those random manaement degrees

The problem with unis is a very obvious one - Too many people go and study something of absolutely no real world use, and/or study it somewhere that is a laughing joke.

Encourage people to do something worthwhile and then they WILL get a job over 15k and WILL pay back their loans!

I personally have no problem with the current system I'll have about 30k of debt when I finish (4 year course - currently on my year in industry at Siemens in Vienna xD). I think paying just 3k a year tuition is fair but any higher is really too much I hope we don't go the way of American Universities. Some people I met here from the University of Chicago have to pay 50k a year (dollars) which I think is outragous. On the other hand I do think lecturers should be paid more (grads getting paid more for there first job than the lecturers).

So what do you call a real uni then? That is a ridiculous generalisation. Similar to saying lets not invent new cpu's because the old designs are better. Just because a university is new, doesn't make it bad. Useless degrees is what makes it bad.

Also sandwich courses give you better chances of getting a job...

Edit: Damn your sneaky edit :o

Unfortunately you'll find the majority of the wealthy students who could afford this increase in the cap are, more often than not, those students on the joke courses just filling the 3 year gap before their trust fund kicks in. Joke courses should be dropped altogether to bring back the respect and worthy-ness you should have with your degree. Luckily a degree from a few of the well respected universities in this country still count, however that number is dwindling as more courses are introduced :/

Also, why are the universities trying to increase how much they can charge us? I thought each student costs £20,000 a year to "run" and that we pay our fees and the government subsidises the rest (for UK students). Regardless of how much we pay, won't the university still be getting the same amount of money?

Yeah, REALLLY hurts.

Go out and play you child...

Aw are we getting a little bitty bitter about not having the opportunity to go to uni. Go on let it all out, just have a big cry about all these idiot students who fail to meet ends meet. I'm sure you've been bottling it up for a while.

Sorry i did edit it a bit:p

A real uni is one employers don't laugh at:
Nottingham
Warick (sp?)
Durham
Oxford/Camebridge
Birmingham
Loughborough
Bath etc

Look at the times university guide, there is a list of unis iirc in england and wales. The bottom half are not worth 3 years of your time.

Useless degrees DO make it bad. Law at Sheffield Hallam and you are useless, you probably don't even know half the stuff you would know compared to good uni graduates. I could have done engineering at Wolvohampton but the courses are 2-3 days a week and are not accredited by any of the institutes, because they are easy and therefore useless, despite having the name mechanical engineering. If I had gone to Nottingham it would be very hard but graduates are likely to start on 20k+.

I massively disagree with saying that sandwich courses are inline with ****. I've learnt loads this year and it helps with my job prospects. I also see no problem with people getting degrees if it helps them get a job even if there degree is a bit ****.

I mean 'turd sandwich' unis, as in poor, below standard ones.

I mean nothing to do with a sandwich course!! Sorry if I made it unclear:p

Ditch funding for pointless degrees.
Up funding for engineering.

I don't particularly want this to happen but if Bristol needs more money to maintain its top 8 or so place in the UK or top 30 in the world then I'd rather that then a drop in standards :/
