I think I've ballsed it...

dont get to wound up yet. There is a possibility that some parts are damaged but as i said above get a replacement board and use that as a test bed for the other components.

tbh my money is on the board being the only component that had gone. im assuming the PC "blew" almost instantly when you powered it up?

Yeah, I have them, I just didn't know what they were for...

I'm a complete fool...

Looks like I may have to fork out for all these parts again. >.<

Strip everything out of the case.
Put motherboard onto a sheet of paper/news paper on a desk.
Connect old PSU you said you have to the motherboard with just the CPU and CPU heatsink on.

If you get BIOS beeps (reporting that you have no memory in) things might not be too bad.

Yeah, seriously, you have my sympathy! I messed up my first build, both in the build process and component selection and I was proper hacked off....but once you get everything working....it's mint :)

Take a step back, have a shot the suggestions here and you'll get it sorted.

Ive done similar things in the past and everyone makes mistakes. Its often the best way to learn something.

try a rebuild out of the case as suggested. you could be pleasantly surprised.

If it is the PSU that's gone, don't go blaming yourself! It's most likely nothing you've done.

Do you have any other PSU laying around you can try in there with the minimum components installed?

I take it back :D

Sympathy matey - do as suggested and build out of case to see if theres any hope.

I hope you get flamed for being nasty as i did for being smug
(and thats a joke btw, for those who dont understand sarcasm when it hits them in the face)

let us know how things go mate we are here to help

Alright, I added the copper spaces and tried it again.

This time, there was no pop... The system doesn't work, but there is a red power light at the back of the PSU...

Could that mean the PSU is still salvagable?

You really need to try it on another PSU. With your having having gone BANG when you first tried it, it's 99% dead, but the other parts may still be ok.

That's why you put only the minimum of components on i.e. if your mobo has onboard gfx don't plug in your gfx card.

Checked your spec me post, your mobo has onboard gfx, so just connect motherboard, mem, cpu + cpufan.

As long as your PSU has the correct connectors for the mobo it'll be fine to try it with.

--edit-- waaaaay too slow with typing

looks like u have used the hole motherboard as a EARTH, put the stand offs on, try again, also have u checked the plug fuse? if still fails, try your old power supply, WITH STAND OFFS! if that still dont work, uve buggerd it
