Do you think the PS4/xbox 720 will be to play PS3/360 games natively ?

Well ?

Personally I think there is a good chance that they will be able to, I believe that the next iterations of our current gen consoles will be using very similar architecture, and not just for cost cutting purposes, but mainly becuase of all the downloadable games and content that we have amassed during this gen, I like many on here would like to believe that I will be able to transfer or re-download all of the games that I've purchased, Wipeout HD, Flower, SF2HD etc onto the PS4 for example, and the same goes for people that have amassed many downloadable games on the 360.

As on-line content is becoming such an integral part of out current gen consoles I really can't see them making the next gen consoles architecture to far different from are current systems because of this content, that way when the new systems are out they (Sony & MS) can carry on offering all of these current gen downloadable games and content at lower prices on their stores next gen and continue to make money on that software and content, while also being able to sell next gen games and content, all on the same store along side each other.

If this is the case and all current downloadable games are compatible with the next gen systems then surely this would open up the possibility that also the disc based games would be natively compatible as well.

what do you think ?

I sure hope so since I'd like my current console to be replaced with it's successor which can play its entire library of games. Saves on space and will be less of a hassle for me too.

Well, Sony have pretty much said they plan to use cell in their next console, just more of them. So i guess backward compatibility shouldn't be too much of an issue? I know nothing of these matters however so i could be talking out of my bottom.

Though i doubt it will never happen, i hope psn and xbox users one day in the future can play with each other online.

Doubt the next XBox will but the PS4 should have a higher clocked Cell and if they stick with an NVidia GPU then it should easily have native hardware BC.

yaaay, thats good news! big question is, will ps4 be able to play ps2 games? :p

Software emulation of the PS2 would be easier on a more powerful machine than the PS3. This is why software PS1 emulation is on the PS3 but not PS2, it would be hard to write an efficient enough emulator.

Once again, not an expert.

i guess its asking for too much really...coding an emulator must be difficult and would make the console cost extra. i hope they keep the ps1 emulator in all the future console releases though, because i couldnt cope without firing up ff7 once in a while :D

you make the analogy that DLC should be a driver for them to make it BC, but they didnt with the VAST collection of PS2 games (well initially they did, but dropped it) that cost around £40 new. If they didnt for these, i dont see why they would just because of DLC??

Well xbox360's are practically worth peanuts now! I think a 2nd hand bare console is worth what? £20??

No big deal if the next gen isn't backwards compatible... though I'd be very suprised if MS missed out a trick to sell more games online tbh.

me as well thats why im so annoyed that they remove BC from the ps3
