It was acceptable in the 80's.......

I may as well chip in :p

:D

The thing is I genuinely don't find myself yearning for something newer. Faster, yes... but not newer. I've driven plenty of modern hot hatches and they just don't do it for me.
No idea what I'd want to replace the Manta with.... not a clue!

I know how you feel mate, most modern cars lack soul (if a car can have such a thing!) as for the Manta replacement, then I guess the obvious choice would be ,perhaps, a capri 2.8? or, being real different and assuming you want a similar style to a manta / Capri - an old BMW 6 Series CSI? or even another Opel - the monza!

From a driving point of view, the e30 M3.

I'll shut up now! ;):D

not a fan of the manta despite my dad having one when I was young, the golf looks really nice and clean.

But then I am a VW fan myself and I've just sold one Corrado in order to buy another :D

Old cars have character, although I've been told on here that there are a few snobs that just rips the **** out of older cars and 'character' :D

I am happy with my old motor so I don't really care :D

I always fancied a Manta GTE when I was younger, but then they were new at that point. Couldn't help but notice that yours is the hatchback 1.8, no wonder the Golf will show it a clean pair of heels. The GTE would be far more in keeping, particularly a coupe.

I drove a friend's Golf once and kept messing up the gear changes. :o

Reverse gear was on the left next to 1st or 2nd, IIRC.

Yep mine's a 1.8 GT. Got no teeth.
All 1987/88 hatchbacks were 1.8 and all the coupes were 2.0 GT/E.

"Manta 1.8 S Exclusive

The 1.8 Exclusive Hatch was the replacement for the GT.
It was the final model available with the OHC engine and hatchback body style. Featuring the twin headlamps and a revised level of trim, it offered great value for money.
It remained in production for just 12 months but was sold in quite large numbers begging the question why the such a popular model was ceased."

Despite being sold in big numbers, I've not seen many other 1.8 Exclusives at all, on the 'net or real life.

Datsun 280Z? ;) (or 280ZX if you want to stick in the 80s)

And yes I agree keeping the old cars going is much better for the environment in real terms, not in the cloud cuckoo land that politicians inhabit that allows them to justify every new tax because of climate change.

My first car in 1990 was a manta 1.8 - bit of a rusty nail really. 1.8 was 90bhp and the 2.0 a reasonable 110bhp... Replaced with a mk2 1.4 Fiesta..

Always liked the look, as i was a big mk1 cav fan.....
