Do you think the PS4/xbox 720 will be to play PS3/360 games natively ?

Doubt the next XBox will but the PS4 should have a higher clocked Cell and if they stick with an NVidia GPU then it should easily have native hardware BC.

I think they will, they seem to have a good relationship with nvidia atm and nvidia seem keen on supporting the PS3, I thought this was quite interesting,

NVIDIA Provides Physics Technology For PLAYSTATION®3

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

SANTA CLARA, CA—MARCH 17, 2009—NVIDIA Corporation today announced that it has signed a tools and middleware license agreement for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) with Sony Computer Entertainment Inc (SCEI). As a result, the binary version of the NVIDIA® PhysX® technology software development kit (SDK) is now available to registered PS3 developers for free download and use on the SCEI Developer Network.

The NVIDIA PhysX technology software development kit SDK consists of a full-featured API and robust physics engine, designed to give developers, animators, level designers, and artists unprecedented creative control over character and object physical interactions by allowing them to author and preview physics effects in real time. The continued adoption of NVIDIA PhysX technology by the world’s leading content developers is resulting in games that not only look as realistic as possible, but also provides gaming experiences where the world’s literally come to life: environments become highly interactive with effects such as persistent debris, including shattered glass and weapons ammunition, trees that bend in the wind, and water that flows with body and force.

“NVIDIA is proud to support PLAYSTATION 3 as an approved middleware provider,” said Tony Tamasi, senior vice president of content and technology at NVIDIA. “Games developed for the PLAYSTATION 3 using PhysX technology offer a more realistic and lifelike interaction between the games characters and other objects within the game. We look forward to the new games that will redefine reality for a new generation of gamers.”

NO! By the time the next gen consoles come out, the XBOX 360 and PS3 will be worth peanuts. History has shown that making a console with BC is over-expensive. The PS3 60GB and even the gameboy SP (which had both hardware for adavance and gameboy colorr compatability) which moved onto the gamboy micro. The only reason the SP was bigger was to house both sets of hardware.

I'm not saying this is a bad thing but thats whats makes consoles so simple and cheap, just plug in and play.

Also 'emulators'. Now obvously from my user-name I'm not knocking them but they are VERY VERY inefficient, for a platform to emulate 1 gen lower than itself is a bad idea.

There is really no point.

What is of more interest to me is what format PS4 games will be on.

If we look at their previous consoles they have used a different format for each one:

PSX/PSone - CD
Playstation 2 - DVD
PSP - UMD
Playstation 3 - Bluray

What next?

PS4 will be on blu-ray i'm sure of it. Sony are part owner of the format and therefore will want to push it as much as possible

Still Blu-ray probably. Will probably support higher capacity though, maybe multiple layer?

Theoretical capacity of a bluray disk is around 100gig, so they'll probably be squeezing 75-80gig out of them by the time the PS4 rolls around. More than enough for any game in this generation and probably the next.

Maybe the Xbox, but the PS is questionable. The Xbox was ATI's first stream proccessor GPU, while the PS3 was the old shader/vector design. Both ati and nvidia use SP/unified shaders now. And then of course there is Intel...

Not saying I'd pay that, but it's what they go for :)
Well I thnik you'd be lucky to get that for a 20gb Premium with wireless pad, PSU and even then £15-£20 of it is P&P?

For just the console alone, nothing else selling it you'd get about £20 in your hand I reckon.... Anyway point is how much would they cost MS in a few years time to integrate into their new console?

Buttons, especially compared to the potential income brought from selling downloadable 360 games.

Have either manufacturer gave out any details for new consoles yet or will they not know themselves?

Sony won't be bringing out the PS4 for a while I'm sure. They're sticking to the same 10 year plan that they did with the PS2.

Don't think any details of the Xbox have been released or leaked.

I wonder if a lot of people will be hesitant to buying the new Xbox at release after all the issues the release console had.

The Wii was the only console I have ever got on release and that was sold after a year of next to no use.

My PS3 which I bought when I sold the Wii has seen what must be WELL into the 1000s of hours of use.

I then bought a 360 before last Xmas and like the Wii, found it wasn't being used much so sold it on here.
