This could get interesting.

The whole point is to CHECK that it has all been done correctly - 99.9% of the time it is correct, but the other time would you rather have them discover that they've done it wrong there and then, or you to find out when you come to pick up the car and go home only to notice an issue?

I'd rather they use their aligning equipment to check my alignment rather than them taking it out on the road to see if it pulls to one side and if it doesn't it's ok lol.

You do make me laugh sometimes. :D

Those guys in the video with the Subaru weren't exactly bouncing it off the limiter.

The car was in for bodywork, they had no reason to be driving it in the first place especially as the owner had in fact left orders with the place to NOT drive the car period.
One thing that people have started doing now is loading valet maps that will not allow the car to rev above a fixed rpm value (or in some cases go above a set speed).

I'm not saying its good that it happened, but its pretty much inevitable if you have a car that is more interesting than the people who work there usually deal with. My car is having body work done atm, I'll report back with how many extra miles it has done on Thursday.

With the skyline I pretty much take it for granted that the car is going to get taken out for 'fun' when it goes to the body shop etc. Just make sure that it goes to someone who understands cars and will warm it up and cool it down properly and it should be fine. Those guys in the video with the Subaru weren't exactly bouncing it off the limiter.

What! They shouldn't be driving it at all in the first place. Glad I know someone who runs a body shop that I can trust - if I ever need work done, he won't thrash the crap out of whatever car I happen to own at the time.

Taking a photo and sticking a post-it on the dash with the current mileage might put them off? :) Having the trip computer at a few hundred miles will help too rather than having it at zero?

Ideally you want someone you know doing the work, but thats often not possible.

I know what the counter is on don't worry. The problem comes when they pick up and drop off the vehicle, its too much of a temptation for some.

There is very little anyone can do if someone wants to thrash your car, it simply comes down to trust and understanding and that is a judgement call. I have always tried to identify a specific mechanic and then tip him and lay the law down of what I expect. I don't care if he takes my car and drives it quickly on a road test, its built to go quickly. I take issue if he does it when cold, over revvs it or drives it without care and attention.

Rules of engagement.

So what exactly was the damage? A few people asked but no reply except the mention of submitting the papers for a claim, surely the poster could have put that, threads now been closed so now everyone's none the wiser.

What?

I took my car into a garage on Sat for alignment, the only driving they did was from the parking area out the front, to the alignment machine, and then back out to the front parking area. There is NO need for a test drive with alignment.

You must have gone to a backstreet garage then with some monkey doing it, "proper" geometry and alignment most certainly does require a test drive after. If only for safety since they are loosening up key components of your suspension!

I agree, and this should be standard for any car, exotica or not. Its someones pride and joy they are dealing with, they have no right to treat other peoples property like that.
I would have preferred a longer descriptive post from the OP as to the specifics of the situation. Thread seems to be closed now.

That thread seems full of people who are incapable of spelling yet seem to have amassed millions in wealth and bought a whole range of super cars.

How do you do that?

The issue at hand however would really get my back up if it happened to me. I think the guy is dealing with it correctly. I'd not stop till the bloke was fired.

What a waste of time reading that. Posting it on PH won't achieve much either as that thread is full of willy waving snobs.

Having said this I have never been a fan of no name and shame as most forums will dig into any claims and usually a realistic conclusion will be formed.....well on ones populated with grown ups of course...;)

You just have to go to P&P to realise that isn't the case with Piston Heads, they have some very high standing members, but in recent years it has become a victim of its own success.

Do Porshes not have a valet mode then? I can plug the laptop into my car and set the rev limit to whatever I like (normally 3500rpm) - I thought most high performance cars had a similar system?

Indeed, Pistonheads has gone down hill in the last 2 years....quickly.
