This weekend I will mostly be shooting on...

Whats that in aid of?

Nothing in particular. Just playing. :)

Very nice :D I guessing that this kit is from where you work ;)

Yup. To be fair it is quite an old digital setup and we are hoping to upgrade it to a current system. But I have seen some of the shots taken on the system and they do come out very nice indeed. But there is nothing better than playing with a new toy. :)

It funny I've just been watching the first episode of the Genius of Photography the last hour and then saw this thread and thought I need to get myself some old kit but I've just got my D3 through and my 24-70mm arrived this morning so I'm off out to have a play with that :D. Would be nice to see the results when you get them. What will you being shooting ;)

Digital medium format.:D

Hasselblad 555 ELD with a Phase one H20 digi back to be precise. Should be fun. :)

Sounds like fun, although i've been delving into the world of film for doing landscapes, preferably Pano on 617 format.. Currently looking into buying either a Linhof Technorama + 72mm Super AngulonXL, or a Fuji GX617..

What size files do you get off a digi mf back? 300MB?

For quite a while I was seriously looking at getting a Large Format camera, and the Linhof Technorama was up near the top of my options. Great looking camera. The digi back im using is relatively old, so is only 16MP, so comes out with relatively small files. but even 16MP on a medium format back produces great looking files. Im currently looking at upgrading the system though and will most likely be going for a Hasselblad H3D-II-31. This is a great integrated system, but the back can also be taken off and fitted to something like a Linhof M 679cs view camera. Now THAT setup will be fun to play with. :D

Some of my colleagues have just taken delivery of a load of Hasselblad H3D-II-50's and they're like kids on Christmas morning! Mind you, they work with D3's most of the time, so some people have all the luck!

I did have a quick handle, although didn't take any pictures, but they're surprisingly easy to hold, not what they look like at all.

I'd love the 36 for wedding work, it'd be something that the guests are unlikely to have!!

I'm mostly interested in 617 because I can do proper panoramic, as I hate stitching and just can't get on with it. Film is the only viable option for that format at the moment for a hobbyist. The Seitz 6x17 produces amazing images, but its a scanning back so you can't use it on anything moving, and its around £70k.. :(
Red are also bringing out that 617 monolith thing, but its like £100k or something lol. It'll still be along time before digital gets affordable access to MF/LF quality.

I'm also amazed at the quality of LF lenses, if I go for the Technorama, the Schneider super angulon XL lenses are on a totally different planet from anything on 35mm.. Goodbye to mushy corners, distortion etc..

Have a look at the Nikon D3x, many trustworthy reviews have stated that the IQ is comparable to medium format, and infact recent tests have shown the sensor to outclass many medium format digitals. Combined with the 14-24 and 24-70 you have exceptional performance at a fraction of MF prices.

D3x is good, but my friend also owns a D3x and a 14x24, and the glass is still not even close to a Schneider XL or any of the top LF lenses. To be honest, i'm only really after LF for doing panoramic, and very large prints.

Sorry, I was getting confused with the linhof technikardan. That was the one I was looking at. By total coincidence though, I have just been downstairs in stores and found an old Technorama. Yup.. that is a wiiide camera. :)

I had a try with one of these i found it to be the most erksome usless piece of junk. you could only use it in the studio, i found it couldnt handle 'home' lighting and the noise was terrible not to mentione the horrid iso range.

i hope you get on better with it than i did

Well it looks like im mostly going to be shooting on my D300 this weekend like usual. Got it home and after a lot of fiddling, it seems the firewire power module has a loose connection, making it very tempremental. Think I'll leave it until I can get the power module fixed. But godamn the shutter/mirror slap of the 'blad is a bit powerfull isn't it!?

yeah it is abit strong isnt it, i think you could easily lose a finger, but then a gain my first camera was my dad's Practika MTL3 and the shutter on that thumped rather than snapped, sounded like it was made of iron.
did you get my email btw?

Yes I did, thank you very much. I've fired off an email to Simon this morning. :)
