now - please dont discuss the price as one of the Dons has asked me to make that clear

last week i got the chance to have a go on the new nvidia sterescopic 3d glasses...

the nvidia representative demoed some games that use the stereoscopic feature to OcUK staff, including FarCry2 and Unreal Tournament 3

initially, i see things like this as a gimmick. i know it may sound a bit negative over a new innovation... however, things like this have been tried in the past and have always been a failure.

build quality of the glasses was very good - even on the sample
they are lightweight and feel like a pair of oakley sunglasses
they charge off a usb mini jack on the side of the glasses which is hardly noticable
the glasses have an on/off button on the top left that controls the imaging
and there is a USB reciever module that sits near you to talk to the glasses

the stereoscopic features only work on 120Hz monitors
so unfortunatly you would most likley need a new screen to use them
and the max size the frequency supports is 22"

with a max res of 1680*1050

i played a game of UT3 and had 5 minutes of setting things on fire in FC2
the glasses felt natural after a few minutes and provided an effect i did not expect

rather than things jumping out at you. the glasses give a realistic depth of field

looking down my iron sights in FC2 was fantastic - you could see 'distance' between the tip of the gun and its handle

i was very impressed by the technology

as a keen gamer - i doubt i would invest in a pair for a few reasons
1. i wouldn't downsize my screen
2. i dont think the glasses would be comfortable with a gaming headset
3. i think they would hinder competative online play

having said that - i would get some for single player games

i am really enthusiastic about this hardware evolving and becoming accessable to all - even though i dont think it adds a lot to a games overall experience, i think they make games a little bit richer

no they are polarised, these nVidia glasses are shutter glasses which flicker 60 times per second

ok

why can't they just do what they do in RealD cinemas then?

or is it hard for the graphics card to do that because it's dynamic?

When can we buy them ?

Since early Jan they have been available state side.

They're already available, I think, if this is what we are talking about here.

Not sure if it's hard for the graphics card. I'd assume it just requires a good frame rate. With the lower resolution, it shouldn't be too difficult for a good GPU.

Because your monitor would need a polarizer in front of the image to switch between the images for the left and the right eye and I dont think this tech is viable.

You can use two projectors and have something similar to Imax 3D in the home but its tricky to setup. RealD in the home is a not possible as it uses specialist equipment.

The Hyundai one linked to uses polarised glasses but to get the 3d it interlaces the screen offering 1/2 the horizontal resolution. And driver support for this is limited mainly to specialist applications. It appears not suitable for gaming/consumer use. Not 100% sure.

IZ3D have a monitor that uses 2 lcd panels on top of each other and uses special polarised glasses.. It unfortunately suffers from very bad ghosting (eyes see what the other eye should) and your forced to keep your head in a specific position. It does offer the full resolution, however the 2 lcd's used gives a poorer quality display compared to what we are used too. driver support is ok.

The nvidia solution, does utilise a good display. It is currently limited to the resolution purely because the dvi standard was poorly thought out and requires dual link dvi to achieve this due to bandwidth constraints.

120hz is awesome for First person shooters. And in 3d mode it offers a better quality output than the 2 above. Finally the driver support is what is going to make this work. They are so far doing a great job.

What will really make the difference is if nvidia actually work with the games developers to produce something that is designed for 3D. Currently all the solutions are doing a ok job making existing games work. The developers currently have not bothered with giving Z-depth much thought, until they do so, pop out, depth etc will be mainly to the drivers specifically supporting individual games (like the old sli profiles).

As the dons have supposedly forbidden pricing talk.. I can only assume they are working on a cracking deal for us.. - well I hope so ;)

thanks for the info :)

Man I know 1680x1050 isn't the highest of resolution especially compared to my current 2560x1600, but the performance hit from stereoscopic gaming is nearly 50% give or take.

So that resolution is fine for me, as long as the monitor it self isn't crap then we should be in for a treat.

The last time I used stereoscopic glasses with e-dimensional it was awesome :D, this one is basically the same with better design and LCD instead of CRT.
