Mondeo Mk3 stiff gear change - gearbox problem?

Hi,

I bought my dad this 2004 Mondeo 1.8 mk 3 petrol (54k on the clock) 4 weeks ago from an indy garage: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17962517&highlight=DB_SamX

He only had a short test drive himself before purchasing. Within a week he noticed that gear changes were really stiff. He probably only made <200 miles in that time.

My online searches didn't reveal anything common, the closest thing being stiff gear changes when the gearbox oil is still cold but fine after warmed up. However, my dad still says it's stiff all the time.

Within 2 weeks, my dad told the garage about it, and he gladly arranged for his mechanic to have a look over it in the 3rd week. The latter said it could be a clutch problem, but that isn't covered in the extra warranty I bought, which is fair enough.

However, my dad is wondering whether the mechanic could have said that even if there was something wrong with the gearbox, so that the garage doesn't have to do any repairs. He is quite mechanically able as he used to sort out issues on his older cars, but not in the last few years. He is therefore considering to have someone independent diagnose any issue (Ford specialist / dealer garage) and then see what happens.

(i) Anyone know of the stiff gear change issue?
(ii) Is what my dad plans to do (getting an independent check) sensible? Is it worth letting the garage know first he plans to do that? Any idea on cost?

If the check does reveal an issue that can be assumed to have been there at the time of purchase, we'd of course look to have repairs carried out at the garage's cost. Anything useful worth knowing at this stage?

Thanks in advance.

First thing to do is get the gearchange cables checked and adjusted. Gearboxes on these are usually extremely durable, cable problems can lead to jumping out of gear occasionally. It is more likely to be a clutch or hydraulic problem than something physically wrong with the box.

Has it got a seperate remote on top of the 'box?. If it has, we've had a lot of fwd Transits giving probs with the remote seizing up...i'd imagine it would be a similar/same gearbox?.
:)

Is it a 6 speed diesil? Quite common on those I think, though does get better when warm but still not great. Ford dealer will know what to do, if it's the common thing it's not too expensive from what I remember

Hmm I'm sure there are loads of of threads like this over at http://www.fordmondeo.org, apparently they do tend to be notchy (I know mine is a little).

The first suggestion that tends to crop up is to replace the run for life oil in the gearbox with an alternate ford oil or a castrol oil.

Clutch problems causing stiff gearchange? Thats news to me, sounds like a problems with the linkages/crap oil. Sounds like they are reporting it to be a non warranty fault to make you shell out.

Remote - what does it do? Can't say I noticed

No, 1.8 petrol

Yeah, it came to me too after posting here to try a dedicated forum.

Change the gearbox oil, oil for life is a complete joke.

That was one of the closest solution I found online too and I did ask my dad to mention it to the mechanic. I'll point this out again.

The same thought crossed our minds.

Thanks for the responses so far; will look into everything.

Hi-jack and that, but still, how big a job is it to change gearbox oil? My gearbox is really stiff and notchy most of the time, its bearable but if a relatively cheap change of oil would help it its worth a try.

Try looking for it in here: http://www.fordmondeo.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
Is this it: http://www.fordmondeo.org/wiki/index.php/MTX-75_Oil_Change ?

Indeed, I see the Mondeo forums do mention notchy gear changes a lot, sometives solved easily with a simple oil change, sometimes changing forks, cables, etc.

We will try to change the oil first this weekend to something better before proceeding with anything else.

It may be news to you, but the majority of gear change problems are down to clutches not disengaging fully, either due to wear, broken friction plates or hydraulic problems.

I realise that, but in this case it doesn't sound like that, but it's impossible to tell without actually driving the car.

I was halfway through editing my post and I couldn't be bothered to finish :p

Just an update: another garage has inspected it and said it may be a worn clutch which could cost up to £1k to replace! Car's not driving any worse though.

In general though, would it be unreasonable to consider it sold as faulty or because a clutch experiences wear and tear, it could be deemed the latter? Still only done a few hundred miles and problem was noticed withing the week.

My dad's going to the CAB for advice as well this week.

I too am having a niggle with the Mrs new Mondy.

A garage that i have used for years has advised that the gear linkage needs adjusting.

I know on these its on cables. Does anyone know if its easy to do?

Cheers

Andy

Did they say may be the clutch or it is the clutch?

It may just be the gearbox. Replace that first and if it makes no difference try try the next step.

It may well be the clutch but 1k to fix is a joke. I just had my mondeo's clutch AND flywheel replaced for 647 from a relatively large chain...

Incidentally, there wasnt a problem with getting into gears, but since having it done the box feels a lot lighter and more positive

As a matter of fact, car went to the dealer's garage yesterday and my dad got it back today. Clutch was replaced and gearbox oil changed. He drove the 30 mile back and says gear changes are now much smoother. Cost was split - he paid £250. The only annoying thing is that maybe just the oil change would have been enough but nm now.

Ah well for £250 you've got a new clutch that will last for ages

Did they inspect the flywheel when they had the box off? Its a common problem on these cars, although not really on the petrols with their tiddly amounts of torque :)
