I'm looking to buy a car, as I am bored of mine and I want something a bit more powerful. My current car is a focus 1.6 (56 plate) petrol :(...

The car is going to be used for a commute to work (12 miles a day) and a trip to Newquay every other weekend from Coventry (500 miles round trip)... so ideally looking for something thats relatively good on fuel (my current does 30mpg), fun and comfortable. My only requirements are more than 2 seats and a decent sized boot.

Fire away OCuk!

Do you like the focus you have? If so, maybe pop over to Paynes in Hinckley and have a look at their STs. They'll give you a good trade in, seeing as you've got the econobox version that the recession seems to be demanding and you'll be buying something that probably isn't as saleable at the minute.

Well since you don't seem that "bothered" by cars, may i suggest you at least half your budget and spend the rest on something you care about? 5-7k will get you a half decent 2.0 Mondeo which will have an ample boot, comfortable on those boring motorway drives, reliable, cheap to fix and enough power to make good progress.

I dont think a single "spec me a car" thread hasn't had mondeo as an answer

could get a nice older style 3 series, 330 or something of that nature?

I have a current model ST, certainly worth looking at

edit - also, where does he say he isn't bothered by cars? he said he wants advice....

I don't think people are actually reading the thread.

It will be a company car, and his current company car will be re-allocated as a pool car so he cannot "trade it in".

The Focus ST will sting on Company Car Tax he'll probably have to live in a bin and eat beans out of tins so he can afford it.

all he said was that he uses it to commute, not that its a company car... so the STs fare game.

What sort of thing do you want from the car Chet? Sporty fun or comfortable wafting?

Lol at replies... I'm after something fun, can be sporty but must be comfortable as I will take it to Newquay at least twice a month! I am bothered about cars, just looking for advice really! I've previously owned an old Honda Civic 1.4i and a Audi A6 2.7TDi. I really enjoyed the Audi but found it a tiny bit too big. I have driven a Focus ST and have to say I wasn't overly impressed - felt it was like driving a focus on steroids!

Someone with 15k to spend on a car usually has a slight idea of what they want. And usually when someone says they want something a bit more powerful that a 1.6 Focus, they don't usually mean a 225bhp 2.5l turbo engine now do they?

A Golf GTI would fit the bill, maybe even the ED30? Should be able to get 30mpg on a run, comfortable and practical.

A new model (e90) 330i is also in budget if you don't mind slightly higher maintenance costs?

I have looked at the Golfs and they do seem to fit the bill... Also the A4s are nice but the new shape makes the older ones look like barges (and the budget only allows an old shape). I honestly haven't properly looked at the BMW's... "googles"

First thing that springs to mind is a golf R32. I remember hearing of dealers shifting brand new ones with major discounts a while back.

Are you bothered about the age of the car? Or servicing requirements?

If not, there's a lot of options for slightly older performance cars (thinking M3, RS4, AMG etc) but there's always the worry of something going pop and emptying your bank account in the process :(

There's always a Cerbera too Clicky, but again that could bankrupt you ;) The back seat's are next to useless too lol.

At the other end of the scale you could get a Range Rover, although it'll be way off 30mpg. Clicky I can't see you getting much more comfort than in a RR though, could always get a slightly cheaper one and spending the money saved on petrol/diesel :p (again though, those pesky servicing costs!)
