i have been looking into this as i am on the verge of moving to i7
It seems that very few boards have 3 x 16 pci-e the Asus P6T6 WS revolution being one of those. My research has told me that despite most boards not having 3 x 16 that there is no performance gain against say 16x8x8 in TRI SLI.

Yeah thats kinda what i thought as with gen 2 pcie x8 or x16 dosent make much diffrence

im currently thinking about the top of the range dfi board which runs at x16 x8 x16

The only one I know of that has 3 lanes at x16 when all populated is the EVGA-Classified
It can support UP-TO 4 PCIe 2.0 x16 cards. They will all run at x16

Have you checked out the gains you'll get from adding a third card?

It's pretty pointless really, even more so if you're going to run the third at PCI-E 8X.

I would only need 3 lanes at x16 though
although i think im going to just go for the dfi and run it at x16 x8 x16

I think you'll find its 16x 16x with 2 cards and 16x 8x 8x with 3.

I've done Tri-SLI on EVGA, the XFX is near as damnit the same board and so is the DFI (all based on the Nvidia design)

Tri-SLI works and scales pretty well on the X58/i7 but for me it was overkill as I don't run a 30" screen. 2 cards scale very well and do 1920x1200 really nicely.

Here is a picture of the Asus WS Revolution Pro:

I love the board, but those that wish to go tri-sli should know that unless you have single slot cards, you will have no free slots. You will have to use onboard sound. There are 6 slots, all PCI-Express, which is great, but no extra slots at all, be they PCI or PCI-E 1x.

I'd seriously look into how big your gains are going to be, as you're looking at £170 for a card, and however much extra for your mobo over any other X58.

Gains for Crysis and Stalker Clear Sky? Decent gains.
Gains for other games? Your already at such high fps with 2 cards, that it is mostly for bragging rights.

Of course, if you run 2560x1600 or a 5040x1050 TripleHead2Go setup, it is definitely worth it.

Got most of the i7 setup coming this week.
got 2 xfx 260s already and with my bonus i wouldnt mind blowing a bit more on the third
although ive got myself thinking about just running 2 260s just now and spending the rest on a Raid 0 ssd setup

What res do you run?

The smarter money would be in a SSD setup or a nice monitor.

Honest answer from somebody who has run SLI, TRI-SLI with both 260 216s and 280s is I'd stick with just 2 and get the monitor.

In terms of SSD personal view is its a complete and utter waste for the loads that a single PC will place on the disk system of a machine.
