My friend is insane. Please spec a card for him :D

+1 for pc its multi-purpose is wat makes it the better machine and also just wait a little bit lnger and u can have games from any console plus if you get the rit firmware /dvd drive you can play xbox360 games on it anyway

That's why I put the E5200, they're supposed to be extremely good for overclocking aren't they? :)

I've not got any recent experience with AMD's processors, I haven't used them since socket 939 A64s :p. I wouldn't have a clue what to recommend for a budget AMD system.

Indeed they are. You wouldn't save a huge amount by going AMD but the low-end processors tend to be cheaper for more performance (assuming no overclock). Obviously, most people here would overclock...and hence would get more from Intel stuff...but this guy doesn't sound like "most people" :p

He's assuming that all consoles will be emulated at some point, which is a fair point I suppose.

I've still got a PS2 with loads of games that I love playing, but I can't be bothered hooking it up to my TV, plus the display quality is not very good on the PS2 on a 1080P TV.

There is a fully working PS2 emulator that I've been meaning to try.

What I am really hoping for is an xbox emulator so that I can play my oddworld games. :p

I do have an xbox too, but again, I can't be bothered hooking it up and I'm not paying the extortionate prices for component cables.

Then you've got all the classic consoles with loads of games for them, so it's actually a very valid point.

I spent a lot of time in my school days playing GBA games emulated on my PC, I did have a gameboy and the games, but they were so much nicer to play on the emulators with the enhanced filtering and better controls.

PC is better - if you can handle one properly and sort out the endless configuration issues/driver problems ... and if he doesnt have the will/drive to get through that to the good gaming, well he's probably better off with an xbox or ps3 or somethin.

He sounds like most 'non-tech' people to me :p.

They make up reasons as to why something is too much fuss, even though when you put it to them, their preferred option is just as much 'fuss' and possibly even more costly!

Reminds me of a friend who wanted so desperately to have a decent gaming PC, so he went and bought a 'tiny' PC against my better judgment.

He had odd parents though who assumed because of my age I surely didn't know what I was talking about when I offered to build him a PC for less than the tiny.

We all know the bad rep tiny had, especially for substandard PCs that had hardware errors.

This PC didn't ever play games, it would crash to a black screen within seconds of a game booting.

He couldn't even get it sorted either because tiny went bust shortly after he bought it.

In the end his dad ended up taking it to a local PC shop and got it completely rebuilt, which amused me quite a bit.

I gave him stick over that for quite a while. :D

you buy them like it thats how i got mine from my local comuter store or you can just dwnload the firmware and upgrade your dvd-rom
Somehow I doubt that that's actually true.

How can a firmware upgrade to your DVD drive enable xbox 360 games to run on it?

"Is Huntkey a 'respected brand'? "

No they're rubbish.

Errrm, Huntkey aren't actually too bad from the few reports I've heard. They're not one of the biggest brands but unlike some cheaper makes, I haven't heard much bad about them. Overclockers were selling them as thier own budget line recently. They're certainly nowhere near as bad as say a Q-Tec.

Ok, at long NO SWEARING, READ THE FAQ last my friend and I have convinced another of our friends to go down the pc route rather than Xbox360.

tbh for a technophob a 360 isn't a bad idea, will play all games straight out of the box no messing about. An arcade is only abit more expensive than a mid range GFX anyway.

Besides he's probably not ready to deal with the hassles like updating graphics driver, patching games, configure graphics settings and resolving potential game glitches.

Also not to mention a lot of pc games are bad 360 ports.

and also £45 360 games? Where did you get it from?

From the same place that lists some at £50. :p

Now I know you can get them for cheaper, especially if you go online, but most people buy from high-street stores which still charge quite a lot for 360 games while the PC games remain relatively cheap in comparison.
