Hello motors, quick question - what age is insurance on something like a Scooby reasonable?

I was having a look round a couple, a 2.0 NASP and a 2.0 turbo, both saloon and 1997, happened to see them at a dealer's and thought they looked quite snappy for the cash.

I'm nearly 20 with 2 years NCB, is the NASP the only one they'd touch me on?

That would completely depend on which scooby, your postcode area, your driving history, and your definition of "reasonable".

For me it was 22 (quoted on a classic P1, never actually bothered), but then I refuse to pay over £1000 for insurance.

to get insured on a scooby cheaply, realisticly you're going to need to go a specialst. Cheapest quote for me next year is just under £800 for the VXR with greenlight. Nearest mainstream quote (like tesco, churchill etc..) however was well over £1300.

However, greenlight wouldnt touch me last year as id only just bought the car and had no experience of driving performance cars. This is how scoobydoo69 managed to get insured so young on an STI. He used a specialst who were willing to accept his experience with an Impreza Sport when wanting to insure an Impreza WRX.

The fact they one is a doring dull heavy saloon with power sapping transmission and a feeble engine, and the other is a turbocharged rally car was of no concern to them. All they say was Group 16 Sport to Group 19 WRX so had similar experience.

Interestingly
none of the specialists even came close for me!
my 2005 STi with PPP was under £500 f/c protected N/C
with Privilege of all people!! and yes it was the exact model of my car, they knew the full details, so i was not insuring a PPP for non PPP money ;)

most of the specialists were wanting more like 800+!!!!

but
just for the record ;) I am 39 in a very good area and got full N/C

Surprise... they won't touch me on the turbo, and if the NASP is carp there isn't much point.

I'll stick to the 400 for a bit longer, although I have just been offered a 1.8 bubble Rover 200 for £200... noooo don't do it :o

was just bored so thought I would get a quote.. went through confused for a STI UK model, I live in essex am 24 and have 5 years no claims... £650... over double what im paying for my current car :(

but i believe it was keith michaels.

This is who I have my Impreza insured with. I was after quotes for about 5 different versions of Impreza to help me choose which one I was going to go for.

In the end I'm paying less now for an import than I was for a UK car. £400 FC no restrictions, mods declared - its between 300-320hp I think. Feels much quicker than a standard P1.

As for the NA Sport being rubbish there isn't anything wrong with it but its not worth buying over a turbo - especially if were talking UK only cars.
