8800GTS 640 or 8800GTS 512?

Hi guys,

Just RMA'd an 8800GTS 640 to BFG. They have replaced it with a 512Mb version. Whilst I appreciate that the newer revision of the G92 is in theory better, is the 512Mb faster under every situation than a 640Mb version?

It does seem like a slight downgrade.

The G92 variant of the 8800GTS is a better card than a G80 8800GTS regardless of it's memory size.

I'd be happy with that swap, especially seeing as it's the GTS 512mb, excellent card.

Yeah - the 8800GTS 512mb had similar performance to the 8800GTX so it's definately an upgrade.

The coolers good too - quiet and effective.

8800GTS 512mb is much better than the old 8800GTS 640mb. Lucky man.

I went from a 8800GTS 640MB SLI setup to a single 8800 G92 512MB last year, never looked back.

Great card, quiet and still handles everything I've thrown at it with relative ease. Plus it overclocks like a lord.

One of the best cards I've owned, I'd put in the same value/price/performance catagory as the 9800 pro.

Im using 2 8800gt 512mb in SLI and i must admit everything i have thrown at it has been Kushty, i know its a different card we are talking about here, but from what i read and have expreienced myself the 8800 series appears to have left a very large milestone.

I ran Crysis warhead on the second highest settings, i know the resolution was only at highest for a 19 monitor but 8800gt on its own coped with it no problems

Plus on the G92 chip you get PureVideo 2, so you can offload h.264 decoding to the gpu if watching/transcoding HD.

You can be safe in the knowledge that your GPU is still going strong as the GTS 250

It's a better card, but maybe you'd feel better with a 9400 and 1gb RAM or something?

Actually it was for me as well, sold a 320Mb GTS and went for a 512Mb GT, come to think of it

It's generally a faster card...and it's unlikely you'll be using it in the 2% of situations where it isn't

I switched from a bfg 640 gts to a gainward 512 g92 a while back, was a nice upgrade at the time. (since moved to a gtx 280) the 640mb gts is now in a second rig, but it's nice to know that if it does fail i could get a 512 gts as a replacement.

Only a matter of time until the 512 g92 is phased out of the rma process, i here that 8800gtx bfg owners sometimes got a 260 gtx as a replacement.
