Silver 2006 56 VW Polo S 5-Door 1.4 @ £6,225

Black 2006 56 Ford Fiesta Ghia 5-Door 1.6 @ £6,347

Which is the better car? :)

That 1.4 in the polo is a bit meh, 73bhp if I remember quickly. The Fiesta will be slightly cheaper to run and will be more powerful.

Is it because its 1.4 that it is meh or would the fiesta at 1.4 simply be faster still... and so being 1.6 makes it even better?

EDIT: just in case its helpful the mileage on the ghia is 32k and the polo is 22k :)

I've got a 1.4 in my Fiesta and it's pretty gutless too. The 1.6 in that Fiesta is very economical and would be a better bet than the polo.

Top end Fiesta or base model Polo. No brainer really.

I am looking for a quick, reliable car and all my life I have kept hearing VW was reliable.

The VW polo was the same age with less miles and was in my price range, I never happened to know it was really slow till 15 mins ago

Or spend the money on something bigger, better equiped, and not a small hatchback so you wont get bent over by the insurance company.
Small hatches seem to be loaded for new drivers.
When I passed my test, the difference between a pos pug 106 and a 2 litre saloon was all of £40 a year :s

I would personally have the VW. It'll be easier to sell when you need rid of it, and you will not have a ford looking back at you every day of your ownership.

Neither are well specified, neither are fast, neither will probably stay in your hands for that long. I'd have the VW until i had some NCB then look around for something else. In fact no i wouldn't, but out of those two i would.

What about a 1.6 fiesta zetec s if you'd prefer a sportier 3 door car.. if not then I don't see why the Ghia is a bad choice :)

WOOAAAHHHH!!!!!

Now I am really confused?!

Okay maybe I should have started the thread

Wants car that is kinda quick... but at the same time can not afford to be paying huge amounts on a car that breaks a lot, drinks lots of petrol and costs my organs to insure :p
Budget 6k MAX

Thanks for any help... and yes I know I am a car n00b :)

Badge snob :p

The Fiesta will be easy to shift too but it will loose it's money quicker. If you want to waft around in relative comfort than the Polo will be fine but if you want a bit more poke, something slightly more involving to drive and you can handle the trade off in interior quality and poorer residuals then the Fiesta will be good.

The Fiesta will probably feel quick to a new driver. Shortly after passing my test I 'terrified' myself in a Fiesta ST - n00b :)

Due to running out of money a lot since 17 I have had a few instructors with numerous small engine learner cars that are zzzzzzz to drive and require planning to overtake :)

I want some power as in can overtake when I choose and pull pass with ease if that make sense

Yup, a Focus 1.6 facelift is what you want. It's "kinda quick", roomier than the Fiesta, better handling than the Fiesta, £3k cheaper than the Fiesta, same engine as the Fiesta, same running costs as the Fiesta, better looking than the Fiesta.
