Street Fighter (SFIV, SSFIV, HDR)

Just played a few games online after a break of a couple weeks, seems it's still full of ken and akuma types.

I've also got 1,500BP and keep getting matched with people <300, what gives?! I only get about 20-30 per win :(

How do you beat Balrog using sagat ? he has that anti air headbutt and walks through your projectiles ? seems pretty broken to me I guess he owns all shotos then ? The more I play this the more I think I see vast imbalances in certain matchups

You cant jump in against him and you cant throw a projectile or even counter any of his moves as he recovers to block too fast seems broken to me

all he has to do is sit there charging crouched and wait if opponent jumps in it's air headbutt if they throw a fireball it's that move that goes through it and hits

Which vids were they? The cynic in me assumes this is sarcasm :p

The one in the PS3 tournament against tony888 was humiliating, used two totally unconfirmed ultras.

It's not sarcasm, I understand that people crack under pressure but your successful combo strings and crossups are nice :)

Cancel means to use focus to cancel special moves' 'cool down' period. An example of this is again Ken who can use focus just after doing a dragon punch, this will stop him from jumping in the air after the punch connects, he can then step forwards and execute a super which will catch his enemy before they hit the ground from the original dragon punch.

Depends! Think there's a few different types of cancelling iirc something like this...

Focus cancel like you described, then a super cancel such as doing a Blanka horizontal ball but also do the motion for his super, if you time it right/fast enough you do a super immediately after hitting your opponent. Ryu can do the same with his Hadouken immediately followed by his Shinkuu Hadoken.

and then you have cancelling a jab or other normal punch/kick into a special, not sure if they have a specific name for this.

Anyway as for Abel his bread and butter 2-3 punch combo into a throw does my head in, I fail at blocking it so much.:p

You can't claim someone is broken because you got beaten by that character. :p

...even if they are as annoying as lets say Zangief... :o

Hey I'm not talking about your average balrog player here the guy had immense skill and I couldn't even get a look in

Oh, well thanks very much then! My combos are good when they connect but i need to learn how to poke my way into them, relying on jumpins and mistake punishment works against 99% of people, but those few that rarely make mistakes i'm pretty useless against.

That means he is more skilful than you, not that the character is broken (not an insult btw, even the best on OcUK are average in comparison to the best players). I used to lose to RP2000 all the time and was certain his mental 3xhit fireball was just plain unfair, these days however the tables have turned. As with all things, practice is key.

Anyway as for Abel his bread and butter 2-3 punch combo into a throw does my head in, I fail at blocking it so much.:p

So many people complain that i use it too much, but what they fail to understand is it is his dragon punch equivalent, just in combo form. It does a little less damage than a fierce dragon punch and is actually much more punishable. The advantage as you have rightly pointed out is that it is a difficult one to block. I've been practising however and have worked two ojste-style focus cancels into the mix, only managed to pull one off online though (which you can see in the early stages of round 3 of my match against RP2000 in the league). Not saying you're complaining btw, i just find it ironic that someone will complain about it while spamming fireballs/dragon punches, IT'S THE SAME THING!

Balrog is pretty lethal but you can keep him at bay with projectiles pretty easily, though he has ways of getting through them it still slows him down quite a bit. I can't really give many tips as I rarely encounter Boxer players online and I pretty much main him anyway. :p

But I have walked over Sagats quite a lot with Balrog.

EX Overhead > Medium Punch > Headbutt > Ultra > Tiger Shotting Sagat. "Say goodnight, chump!" :D

Here is a video of one of the best Balrog players vs a Sagat; Video contains swearing

Streeteh fancy some games? Casuals not league if you don't mind I fancy trying some Ryu along with some different Balrog combos I haven't used online yet!

Key to balrog is stay grounded until he gives you an opening, then you cross him up and break any charges he may have going. While it may seem he is just unleashing a constant barrage of powerful moves, they are all reliant on him remaining on that side of the screen and charging up his next attack. As soon as you cross over him his charge is broken and, if you've managed to pull off a good crossup, you then get a tasty combo as your reward.

Not saying balrog is easy though, he's third on my list of 'oh crap, they've picked him' characters behind blanka and the fat gief.

[EDIT] I'd love to margaret but i just 5 mins ago switched off my PS3 to go to bed, been procrastinating on here but i am actually off now :E

Really easy to avoid cross ups as Balrog now though, you just headbutt or dash punch to the other direction and you are safe, you can also do the turn around punch but I find headbutt/dash nice and quick.

Yep the Rog is pretty high tier and his Ultra is easy to setup and has some pretty damaging ways to juggle into it.

Ok Streeteh, another time. :D

http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2009/mar/19/capcom-explains-why-alt-outfits-were-sf4-disc/

On SFIV costumes, there was no way to have secondary costumes be visible to others (and the ability to show off the goods to others is important) unless everyone had the assets.

The easiest way to do that was to build them in advance and put them on the disc... and to be clear we do have FREE content coming to SFIV in the form of the Championship update, which costume sales are subsidizing.

The alternative would have been to develop tech we don't have in order to stream them to folks who don't have them (slowing down load times during matches when someone doesn't have the appropriate costume locally). Because that would have been far more complicated/expensive to develop/test and been a worse experience for players, the on-disc route was taken.

Fair enough to be honest, although a small game update would have been another solution I'd have thought to put the costumes on peoples machines but then again perhaps the costumes take up more space than we'd think and of course they have to compensate for those using memory cards (I guess? On the 360 I mean)

Gonna give Ryu a bit of a bash next time I play. He was the first character I played with when I picked up the game until I decided to try Rose as a main (well pretty much my only character really as anyone that has played with me will tell you!)

Not many people on SRK seem to rate her either so seems a good idea to learn another character. I can definatly see a few of their points, but I'm not really experienced enough with the game to really see a lot of them and how they really affect play.

There also seems to be a lot tips and videos about for Ryu as well which I love to read through/watch when I have the time. At the very least anyway experience with another character can only help my overall game if I decide to exclusively go back to playing Rose.

it takes some timing its one of your main assets as sagat player, you control the space and they have to come to you. when you have your ultra up you can apply some massive pressure because they dont want to jump (that kick leads to a free ultra :p) but they still need to get past your tiger shots :p
