Puncture Resistant Bike Tyres

OK, I'm planning to start commuting by bike and it's about 20 miles each way. The last thing I want to have to do is stop to change an inner-tube halfway and so I'm looking for recommendations on puncture resitant tyres and tubes.

I've currently got Schwalbe Marathons on my hybrid and they have been excellent, but I don't do anything like the mileage I'll be doing on my drop bar so I'm not going to assume that they are the best.

I've been looking at 700 x 23-25:

Continental Ultra Gatorskin
Continental Ultra Kevlar
Schwalbe Durano Plus
Schwalbe Ultremo DD
Schwalbe Marathon Plus
Specialized Armadillo

Any recommendations from any of the roadies out there?

I was also thinking about getting some slime tubes; are they worth it or are they just a con?

Weight isn't a massive issue as I weigh 12 stone and then I'll be carrying a rucksack as well, but I would like to keep the weight and rolling resistance down if I can.

Cheers.

From Bikeradar forums, Commuting section - they will generally recommend Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres. They do add weight but probably negligible rolling resistance.

Slime tubes - well, one or two people will swear by them, or by the slime stuff you squirt into a normal tube, but the majority think they're a bit too much hassle - plus if they do go bang inside a tyre, you get goo everywhere!

Grrr, who do the manufactueres need ot make so many tyres. Can't they just to a light puncture resistant, a medium with more resistance and a heavy bulletproof?

If cyclists weren't so particularly attracted to shiny things, then that's probably all they'd do :P

I use Schwalbe Evolution Marathon Supreme on my hybrid, i do about 100 miles a week and haven't had a flat since I bought them in December. Expensive but well worth it.

3000+ miles on specialized crossroads armadillo elite, road and xc. 1 puncture :) which was an arrow head kinda shaped sharp stone.

Ok, I've ordered a pair of Marathon Plus. I've got the 700x35c on my hybrid and I've not had a puncture in over a year. Only problem is that nowhere has the 700x25c in stock; I've placed the order with Chainreaction and I'll just have to wait.

In the meantime I've also ordered some Gatorskins as a fall back. I guess you can't have too many tyres or tubes.

I run 2 bikes doing a fair amount of miles both running Armadillos and am yet to have a puncture on either of them, touch wood, in about a year. Cracking tyre, but a bit of a pig to get onto the rim.

I'd be interested in a similar tyre but in 26" size, are there any similar offerings? I keep getting glass in the tread leading to many slow punctures :(

I've got Schwalbe Marathon Plus on my tourer / commuter price. 700Cx32. The tyres weigh an absolute tonne, 800gms each, but I'm pretty confindent in their puncture protection.
The winter tyres for my road bike are Bontrager Race Light Hardcase tyres. Not had a puncture on these since fitting them ~ 2 years ago! Not too heavy in 700x25 size ~350 gms

I should also say that these have lasted so much better than the Conti Gatorskins that I always used to run in the past. I used to be worried that the Armadillos would be too unforgiving and slow rolling. If durability and puncture resistance are a priority though they are really good, and I don't notice that they are slower

Digging up an old thread, but my continental ultra sports are looking a bit worn and I'm starting to get punctures again. Think I'll invest in some of these Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres and give them a go. I've got a 32 mile round trip to work and don't want to deal with punctures! Was considering the gatorskins otherwise.

I have Slime Tyre Liner which is a plastic strip not the goo. Since putting these in I haven't had a puncture yet although I did change the tyre at the same time from semi slicks to one with a road tread.

I suck at puncture repair.
