Its that time of year again, Insurance renewal. Currently with Morethan, and paid £306 for fully comp on my Group 16 Civic VTi-S (last company said group 15) So anyway my renewal letter came in today telling me that this year it was going up to £370. So on I went to one of those insurance comparison sites, and as it turns out I can get exactly the same cover for £247 with who?? Bloody MORETHAN! so after a call to them saying that they were still cheapest but £123 less than my renewal the woman told me to cancel my current policy then buy the new one online. Its a bit stupid, but i'm all for saving £123.
You would think it was less paperwork for them just to ammend my renewal to the same price and continue as normal.

they can charge less for new policies because mugs pay over the odds on renewals.

last year i was offered £440 to renew mine. eventually i renewed, with the same company, for £360

might try n get the gf added to the policy, it increases teh premium though but she has been itching to thrash the car

My dad had this problem with Churchill. He just didn't renew, opened up a new policy, saved about £60 and sent their own proof of claims back to them :p

I do this every year, cancel it and take out a new one.
I thought everybody did this?
Web prices usually include a 10% discount etc.
Should always shop around, my first year I saved about 200 from cancelling, for all the hassle its worth...

Similar happened to me with Elephant this month, although they could deal with it all over the phone for me :)

Had this with Elephant, rang them up saying Admiral could do it for over £100 cheaper, same cover, thay brought up the Admiral quote and said they could match it, why they didn't give me a lower quote to start with, i dont know.

Same thing happened to me with Esure but they managed to give me the discount without cancelling, all it took was holding on the phone for 30 seconds.

Last time i used esure i ended up swapping insurance companies.

Phoned them up to say that i had found the same cover for £17 less, and was told that they do not price match. Completely stupid rule as most companies i have used normally try to lower the price they have quoted as much as they can.

That's obvious - that's just price discrimination. That's like asking 'why don't car dealers post up cars at the price they paid for them?'. They are trying to make a profit. However at the end of the day if you haggle hard enough a car dealer will likely sell you a car for £1 more than he paid for it. That's his indifference point, however he wants to sell as few cars as possible at that point.

But then if you spell it thay, I'm guessing you wouldn't know that.

Funny that, happened same time last year!

~£330 with Bell

Renewall comes through, £470

Do Bell quote online, £336

Call Bell "Hi, ny renewall has come through, yet I can get the quote online as a new customer at £336"

"Ok sir, we will match that price, your new documents are in the post."

Its done for those people who just pay without bothering to check. Why charge the proper rate when they can creep it up and a lot of people wont even notice.

It's not just insurance that do this. I had the same with my RAC renewal, can't remember the prices now but the difference was about 30 quid, I phones them up...

:D - How come my renewal is for £X+30 when the price on the website is only £X?
 - The price on the site is only for new customers
:D - What? You mean I have to decline this renewal then take out a new policy on the website.
 - Sorry, you can't do that either
:D - Why not?
 - Because it's only for customers who don't currently have an RAc policy
:D - I see, so what you're telling me is that in order to get the advertised price, I'd have to cancel and join the AA for a year, is that correct?
 - Hang on, let me speak to my supervisor
(crappy music)
 - Ok sir, as a one off we'll let you renew at the new customer price. Would you like to pay now?
