Valve's 75% off offers - will it help stop piracy ?

Besides all the economic arguing, I think it's a very good idea. It will never kill piracy, however I reckon it'll goad a lot more people into actually buying the game.

For example, someone downloads a game because at retail it's X price. They enjoy it, then see it on Steam during a sale for what seems reasonable, and they then buy it. I would see that than more than reasonable. Not everyone who downloads a game is an amoral asswipe.

That's really not more than reasonable. I don't get an idea that people have a right to a piece of entertainment. If people make something, it's up to them to decide what price to charge. If you perceive it to be too high just don't buy it- just because you disagree with the price doesn't mean you have the right to pirate it.

Something I will never understand about pirates is that they are hurting themselves as much as their fellow gamers because their expensive gaming hardware will become useless without new & better games to experience so they will eventually be forced to buy both PS3+X360 just to play anything with a decent development budget.

2006 was a poor year for PC gaming so I had to buy PS3+X360 or wait for it to improve on PC. Glad I kept both as I am forced to buy games on those platforms when the PC is not getting much attention.

I really dont play much of my 360 at the moment, i play fifa a lot, but thats about it. I still had the most fun last year on my pc playing Mass Effect and WOW, pc gaming is still great.

will it help stop piracy ?

No. If someone can get something for free they will.

As i've said time and time again, the only thing that can truly discourage piracy is a excellent online segment which requires a unique CD-key to access. Look through any pirates collection and i can pretty much guarantee they will own legitimate copies of Half-Life 1+2, some form of MMO and Battlefield 2

Battlefield 2....?!! Ugh, no way. Traded that in. Didn't get much for it, even **** ******* didn't seem too keen on taking it.

Er, I'm not suggesting I pirate games. I'm a good boy :)

IA few years back I would download games and look for hacks, cracks and patches. With the advent of Steam and their pricing, I had to ask the question why bother. All I want is the experience of sitting down playing a game for x ammout of time and thats it.

A few years ago could you afford to buy all the games you wanted to play? not saying this is an excuse, it's just that I used to think the same as you whereas I always purchase my software now, but now I can afford it as I work full time.

Go valve at the price they selling it (weekend deals) ur be mad not to buy it...)if u want it) c its like this,.,hmm a game i can torent 6gigs or i can buy it for say 5 to 15 squid well id rather buy it tbh, every1 h8ts downloading slowly.

Steam is the future imho and its fast. and it remembers all ur games u bought b4, i think its pretty cool

I've been taking a bit of an interest in this.

So far Steam have sold Lost Planet, Left 4 Dead and now World of Goo with 75% off in recent weekends.

Reading this article recently, and it looks like they have been experimenting with these offers, and found they are making more money with these very low prices.

So as they have nothing to produce once the game is written, and if they continue sell them at these prices, a lot more people will buy them (as has been proved), they make more money, the games makers make more money - and everyone is a winner.
Surely this is the way to go to stop piracy.

not until the stop selling games to europe for 50€

pirating games does not work on multiplayer.....they will not work online...only single player works,so to play online you have to buy, piracy has been around since the beginning of video games and its here to stay, there are some very talented coders out there who dedicate there skills to cracking games, groups like fairlight, skidrow have been around for years and are here to stay...get used to it i would...piracy is never ever gonna go away;)

No people who download pirate games will still rather download them than even pay £1.

Will only help if the game requires you to buy for the online and the multi is great and desirable.

I had previously pirated World of Goo, i didnt play it much but bought it at the weekend at that price, the 75% offers are great, long may they continue.

Done the same with quite a few games recently.

Steam sales have stopped me pirating a lot, I've been buying quite a lot recently in the steam sales.

Steams £3.49 Bioshock over Xmas was one of the greatest deals ever, and what made me start to use steams store a lot more.

I feel sure it helps prevent piracy. When so many games are just a few quid you don't think twice about it. Though I find certain features of steam annoying its over all a rather splendifferific thing.

Even better bargain than Bioshock (then again it was a bit scary for me :p). Cracking game. In fact I might boot it up later this evening.

What username are you under?

thepeg is me, as well as peganator (my old one, before I bought it on steam).

Ranked just under a hundred, was up at 17 last year sometime.
