Hi,

Hopefully going to be moving into a new flat, and the development is quite new so flats available on all floors.

I am not sure what floor to go with though.

Bottom = easy to get to, but noise from above (ie feet + music), noise from cars
middle = just as hard to get to top, but noise from above and below
top = "hard" to get to (4 levels high in lift though, not too hard), only noise from below (with no feet), little car noise, no one can see in, harder to break into

I am thinking of moving into the top floor. have i missed anything obvious that i should be thinking about too? i've never lived in a flat (or barely spent time in one), is noise from neighbours really an issue?

(I am kind of basing the noise from feet from that friends episode when the guy below them dies (And they hear the foot stamping above. obviously it wouldn't be that bad, but gotta be true to some degree??)

Top always top. Unless you get a garden with the others. No noise from above and heat rises.

And yes neighbour noise can be hell. Is this a converted house or a block?

Top floor is always the best option.

Bottom floor: noise from flats above and communal areas, security issues from street and/or garden.

Middle floors: potential noise from above and below, and communal areas. Fewer security risks.

Top Floor: potential noise from only below. Very low security risk.

I live in the middle floor at the moment and the noise is very copable. It entirely depends on the size of the house or block.

I've never heard noise from below, maybe mild TV mumble but nothing more. You hear footsteps from above much more easily.

Just moved into a middle flat, myself.

Oh, also if you have someone below you, their heating helps make yours a little cheaper! You're not trying to heat the ground below you, as you're nicely insulated from the cold soil.

I'd only want a ground floor place if I could get a garden too. Otherwise I feel quite secure being higher up.

Top flat also means you won't get flooded by anything leaking in someone else's flat.

AND you have a lift! I carry my bike up rather a narrow and bendy flight of stairs to get it inside.

So, I'd go top, too :)

Definitely top as long as the lifts are reliable. Lifts are rarely reliable though, so I hope that there's at least two in your block!

Top. No question. I speak from experience (I lived in a top floor flat for a while).

Top for the win. Accept no substitutes!

I've got a ground-floor flat. Security and noise is a bit of a concern, noise tends to come from the entry doors rather than the flat above. Also makes it a bit draughty. Moving in was so much easier than it would have been otherwise though, and it's nice not having to drag shopping bags up several flights of stairs.

Make sure you dont buy a huge sofa :D

huh?

block

re: everyone else - looks like top it is.

was going to move into bottom (based just on its quicker to get to) until someone mentioned the noise.

Top floor is also good in the winter as you'll be getting all the rising heat and so won't need your central heating on as much.

Summer you'll be sweltering though!

although fire = lose

Which is why if you are further up than you can safely jump from (i.e. 2nd floor and up) you buy one of those roll up fire escape ladders that go over and out a window.

Live on the top right now, lovely. Only a pain to have to carry a pushbike up there, but honestly a bit of exercise is good for you, also fail for using lifts to get to the the fourth floor unless you are disabled :p

Depends how tolerant and/or active you are.

Top or middle will suck the big one if you have annoying neighbours who complain when you are moving about.

As someone who normally has people round and parties etc, I've always gone bottom flat as it means less tiptoeing around, plus I'm usually either out and about or having people round so noise from above doesn't bother me.

As most above - top floor.

If the ground floor flat has a garden that may sway your decision. Big sofas don't fit in lifts, and washing machines are extremely heavy though! :D
