I am confidant my friend is wrong. He is confidant he is right. Obviously I had to bring the discussion to the internet.

It is to do with the words borrow and lend.

He said to me

"James came round to lend the film."

I then asked my friends if he was going to watch it. But he doesn't have it, James has it.

So I told him James didn't lend it, he borrowed it, it was my friend that lent the film. My friend thinks borrowing something is the same as lending something.

So is lending the same as borrowing, or the complete opposite?

To repeat, albeit in different words again lol.

Lending is to give out something with a view to retrieving it. Borrowing is to recieve something with a view to returning it.

You borrow, I lend. I borrow, you lend. He borrows, they lend. etc

Misuse of "lend" and "borrow" is one of those little things that gets people marked down as "not too bright".

The offender is heard, judged and sentenced - their entire future life may well be affected in terms of career or lost girl friends - and they don't even know it has happened.
