Power cut, not a concerning matter?

So last night there was a Power cut in my village starting at 7 ish which lasted up to just past midnight. There were no warning regarding this, so im guessing there was a fault on the grid.

But what confuses me is that I didnt get a single news on the local radio about it. I would have thought they would have known the second it happened, notified the residents through radio on what happened (atleast?) and fix it straight away.

The the repair vehicles arrived around 11 40 which seems a little on the relaxed side ? Not many trucks/vans pass in the area so i was on the look out.

So, is a powercut not a emergency worthy matter? or is it just that no one realised there was a powercut because it was a small area.

BTW i live in South cambs (Hauxton)

Did you call the powercut line to see if anyone had reported it?
They normally have a recorded message stating faults and time scales.

Maybe everyone else thought someone else had reported it?

I would have thought that a power cut in a small village is not exactly news worthy. We’ve had a few around here which have never made the news and that's in a London suburb. Why should they, they’re not exactly an emergency.

I don't see your problem really?

I live in a fairly remote rural area and we have cuts like that several times per year. It's not a news worthy story to be honest so I would not expect it to be on the radio unless it is a massive area off.

They have a telephone number you can ring up and they would advise you of the estimated time to complete the repair.

And lastly they may have been busy elsewhere so they may take some time to arrive or perhaps there were two faults, one at the transfer station and the vehicles had been there first to fix that before coming to fix the damage done at a local level.

We had power cuts in October, one evening the power kept going off for every half hour for about ten minutes. This is inside the M25, not in the sticks. It actually happens reasonably often and isn't the end of the world, so there isn't any need to sound the sirens and send out the army.

You just call your electricity company, you phone will work if it is corded, and they will usually be running a recorded message telling you what is happening.

When I were a lad we were advised to keep candles and a torch in case of such things. I still do.

Doesn't the grid have some clever system that notifies the mechanics automatically? :(.

Then above is probably the case. So what is this power cut line...?

EDIT: fair enough,
just didn't have one in years around here. And I dont exacly mean news worthy, but i would have thought they'd put effort in to letting people know of the situation rather than just finding time to fix the line.

Hell it happens so often with us I keep a generator. Within 5 minutes I have power throughout the house again (flick mains switch and plug generator into a plug socket to reverse supply the whole house)

Then I always make a cup of tes for our retired neighbours.

I can guarantee I get at least two power cuts a month (last one was last Tuesday from about 20:00 to 03:00).

To give SWALEC credit, they are generally there within the hour and will often set up about 4 or 5 portable (and high powered) lighting systems that give some lights into the houses.

But, just part of living in the country I guess.

"Hi there it's just 15 minutes to the non-stop Rick Wakeman hour here on Radio OcUK, and I've got some bad news for residents of Hauxton, South Cambridgeshire. Incase you hadn't noticed that you're now sitting in the dark listening to your battery powered radio then I'm afraid you're experiencing a power cut.
Of course if you're still driving home and are alergic to torches then I suggest you slam on the breaks, flip on your high beams and speed off out of the area as fast as possible.
Now on with the mix of todays best music and classic hits. This one goes to shimy182, its Elton John, and candle in the wind.."

PK!

We had loads the other week but all short ones, On my way to work I indicated at a roundabout & all the lights in the street went out  I thought it was me & quickly turned my indicator off :o + :p
Whilst at work that night I went out in the yard & all the lights went out, Unfortunetly they came back on just as quick though :(

We had a power cut a couple of weeks ago that started at 5.00am with the power eventually coming back on at 10.00pm, it affected a huge area of the town and loads of local shops were closed because of it, including a big Morrisons!

In the evening it was really wierd, how I imagine it would be a long while after a zombie apocalypse, there were no street lights, no lights on in houses, no one out and about, and everywhere was pitch black...it was brilliant!!!

I have a crate of Mollys ready & waiting for just that occasion :D

Best place in a powercut is the local village pub. Or in bed with the missus.

There is always a baby boom 9 months after a serious power outage, No surprise there then a :p

(Learnt that from my geography teacher about a zillion years ago. Told you I was listening & not fantasising about locking us in the book cupboard :p)

Once had a power cut when I was in a restaurant in North London. Power went just as they were about to serve dessert; the apologised profusely and pointed out that on the plus side the tills were off so they couldn't charge.

There were 10 of us at the meal, and it had been excellent, so we each put £30 in as a tip for all the wiating staff who served us. Went back loads of times after that and the head waiter would always find us some special wine that wasn't on the list. He was also a reverse Jesus as the wine would turn into water on the bill!
