i7 920 retail or oem?

Have to let me know how they do, Really interested. £240 is a lot for 60GB but 400mb/s read & 320mb/s write seems to be a little premium for the performance. And 60GB for OS HDD is plenty enough in anyones books.

They are bleedin marvellous! Testing with ATTO benchmark shows I'm getting 360mb/s read and 300mb/s write on the onboard ICH10R controller, nearly double the quoted max speed of a single SSD. See my posts in this thread for details and screenshots.:D

Cheers for that mate, Seems like my decision is made :) Are they SLC or MLC though, cant seem to see anything about that? SLC is a lot better i hear???

Why would one be crazy not to overclock it? I'm getting an i7 920 next week with a gtx 295 and I have decided not to bother over clocking it. Overclocked it won't make much difference in games and it's already a damn fast machine so for general purposes I assumed it's more than adequate... I don't do video editing or encoding etc.

You don't do any video coding or editing and you're getting a machine capable of running 8 threads? There are maybe one or two games at the moment that can use 4 threads! So you're gonna spend all that cash and just get an i7 for the e-bragging rights then. I wish I had that much money to throw around!

As hernaldo said an i7 920 will OC like a beast, but if you're not gonna then why not get a Quad rig and do something special with it like sticking in 4 SSD's as a boot array in RAID 0? I've only got 2 and they fly, but Holy Mackerel Batman! 4 would be killer! Go on, bin that i7 setup and get stuck in!

tbh I'm not sure! But I based my purchase desicion on loads of threads in the Hard Drive section of these forums and a link that was mentioned there to an Anandtech article here. It's very heavy going but also makes for interesting reading (it's very long so some skipping through the index is highly recommended!) Good luck :)

Nice one for the link, I am an avid reader when it comes to technology, will defo have a good read, and there reviews always seem pretty good tbh

Thanks ;)

Read it all, VERY GOOD review. I'm highly impressed with the vertex and how OCZ have gone about it. I'd expect there may be futre firmware updates ti further improve the drive to with optimizations. Hopefully the TRIM command
will be available to as a firmware update, as he said, i think its owed to the early takers of SSD's. The only worry about that system i see is that it will be erasing the block's more often to gain performance and sacrificing the amount of erases which will effect the life of the drive which wasn't mentioned.

Still, its eased mt concerns on purchasing SSD's over Ratptors. Can't thank you enough for that insight ;)

Glad it was of use to you. I was impressed with the clout that Anand Lei Shrimp (think that's his name without looking...) has in getting the CEO of OCZ to bow to his wisdom and get them reworked so quickly - the Jeremy Clarkson of the PC industry perhaps?! But then as he said the earlier bad review of the OCZ SSD's really hurt their sales figures.

Also and back to my SSD's I've done some more tweaking and my read speeds are now just over 400Mb/s! These things are amazing. From a cold start it takes my system longer to go through it's POST than to get into Vista once POST has finished, no more waiting for side bar to load etc - it's all just there in a flash.

Thats swift! especially loading bloatware vista :) I saw that 24 samsung SSD's video and cant believe how ridiculously fast that was ha ha. An insight to whats to come from SSD's in the future. Unless newer ones come out in the next month 2x Vertex's it is. Amazed to see them out perform there yet to be released top end models in some cases too. Cant wait get this kit now!!! Should have left it a few weeks before looking into it but better to be well informed before splashing £1700+ and ending up with a lame duck, which some of the SSD's seem they could be :)

I have just got myself a oem i7 920 from here and currently running it at 3.8ghz. I'm only using the Akasa Aero cooler though not the Noctua unfortunately. I have not tried any quicker as that is fast enough for me at the moment.

Djay i am going to get a i7 bundle which users the same heatsink us you have got could you or anyone comment on how quiet it is.
