Been helping my brother look for a new car for a while now, he's looking to spend about £3K. We have been through Golf 1.8Ts (as well as other VAG 1.8T), that I advised him against. I said to him that you'd get a better more reliable Foucus for the money, aka ST170. Something I'm sure 90% OCUK would back up?

Anyway....

When looking for STs is there any thing to look out for?

What options are best to have?

What options if any are best to avoid?

Are they all 6 speed?

And any other help you can offer would be great.

Here is a couple I've been looking at-

What do you think?

Thanks!

:D

I own an ST170 and they're fantastic cars.

I would highly recommend he gets one with the climate pack (digital climate control, xenons, heated windscreen etc).

They are all 6 speed. Look out for ones approaching 100k miles as this is when the cambelt is due.

Main thing to look out for is fluid on the clutch pedal. This happened to me and I needed a new clutch master cylinder. Not much of a job but a pain to do!! Apparently this is quite a common problem.

Out of the 2 above I would go with the black one. Grey is obviously the best colour though (i'm biased!!).

Hope this helps.

Bilmey these are dropping in price quick.

Yes they are all 6 speed. Good options to look out for are full leather recaros, a few had a factory fitted subwoofer.

It's not as raw as the CTR but it's no slouch.

The insurance groupings make no sense at all, one group below the RS?

What I don't get is how this car can be group 15 and the RS is 16. The RS is a totally different animal.

If the RS realy is group 16, then that seems quite low for it's performance which is very similar to my group 19 car. If the '16' has come from Parkers, then there's a good chance it's wrong anyway.

I'm pretty sure it is grp 16. I did an insurance quote a while ago and it came out at £800 to insure one at 21 with 0 NCB - whereas things like Focus ST's/Golf GTI's/Mondeo ST's/Leon Cupra R's were all about £1100.

It's just another case of the weird and wonderful insurance!

I'm 22 with 1 ncb, my best quote (Confused) for the above was £2100 comp lol:eek: This is at a PL26 postcode.

Who quoted you £800?

Yep it's pretty absurd, you're paying for the badge. I've driven a few ST170's and although good cars performance is a bit mediocre at 8s to 60 still not a slow car by any means, plus they still look absoloutely fantastic IMO. I miss my ST'd up 1.6 :p

Admiral. I was very shocked when i saw how little the quote was - however i do have a fairly nice postcode.

EDIT: oh, it seems you have an even better postcode than me!

Yeah i know - they're pretty much the only insurance company i can get decent quotes from for good cars.

they quoted me 1k more than most other companies. funny how people get totally different results

£600 with greenlight, £900 with Direct line, 2k Admiral, 3k Norwich union. Stupid differences.

Can't get anywhere near your quote. If I wanted this car, I'd be upset:p
I can get a Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec (Group 6) £410 fully comp.I guess there must be more to it than age/ncb/area/car/job.

I got the quote quite a while ago now, probably 4 months ago, but just did another quick quote on admiral, for an RS and it came out at £1058!
