Nearly totalled a 106

lol, just be thank for your alive. Some lad at work drove over a roundabout as hes brakes didn't work at hit a car on the other side, the car was in a right state and a write off..

I'm no angel but driving to the limit of the car what the road allows, not what you think you can do.

There's no point fitted 220 turbo brakes, they'll be exactly the same size.

In that case then, i would look out for a rover 200/400 series with vented discs so you can use the calipers off it. Then buy some new vented discs, pads and fluid. You can't just slap vented discs on your car without changing the caliper to suit them as the vented disc is thicker.

I'm totally shocked it hasn't already got vented discs, well thinking about it perhaps just shocked. I was under the impression anything with more power than a leaf blower and bult in the late 90's would have them.

I thought that the diesel had vented front brakes anyway?

If not, then you were correct in saying that the 220 setup would be an upgrade. Even the 1.6 came with vented front brakes.

It does seem odd, my 416i had vented discs on it.

They're definitely solid, and up until now they haven't been too bad tbh, but to fit vented discs doesn't seem too bad - EBC do some vented ones that are the same thickness as my current ones so I don't need new calipers apparently!

At the end of the day, it's an old car but the 400 is cracking for handling, the only assumption I can make is that when the discs were done at 40,000 the garage put solid ones on instead, as if my base spec 400 had vented ones surely this one should have!

Think I'll grab the EBCs after next payday, fluid renewal before that though. Is it hard to do?

not ebc red. i dont think your car would be fast enough to keep enough heat in them

To be honest it you will be fine with vented discs with just EBC Ultimax's. The vented will help a lot with the heat so the pads will be kepted within their good working range. Seems like £20 for blacks, £45 for greens. Then a pair of ebc vented discs for £45. If you want stainless hoses then thats £55.

No surprise you overheated them, parkers says your car weighs 1250kg, with 262mm front solid discs. Damn thats a lot of weight for those brakes. You really want the vented, then it'll be fine, I'd actually go greenstuff thinking about it. Can't have too good brakes! (within reason)

Or buy some ZR160/ZS180 brakes second hand (they are the same) for about £120, larger caliper/piston, pad and a 282mm vented disc.

I think I'd do this and be done with it, then you have good brakes that you can rely on. Keep the old brakes when you fit them and put them back on when selling the car and sell the ZS180 brakes on.

You had a mk2 MX5 didn't you? ;)

But then again, they are light cars with not much powaaaaar.
