Hey everyone,
I'm a DJ on radio and as a mobile DJ, and a Media student, and I am in need of a new system. I'm not looking for a cinema setup, as I already have a nice Sony system in the lounge, so it would just be used for audio editing, music and gaming. I work in recording studios as well, so I'm thinking of going down the route of studio monitors. I've been looking at the Behringer range of studio monitors, but I'd like some opinions before I go ahead and buy the system. Anyone got any ideas? Cheers, Chris.
 
The behringer monitors are supposed to be good along with the krk rp range. Saves the hassle as you can just whack them into the back of your mixer ney worries.
 
Tapco s-8's are very good monitors, engineered by Mackie and everybody knows their reputation in the world of monitors, they are the budget range, you can pick up a pair for around 260 quid and they are very nice, have a pair myself, saves a lot of money on KRK's, which are also very good

These monitors are very good for the cash. Much better than the Absolute 2's they replaced here. They are VERY bassy for studio monitors...it's just a case of whether that's a good or a bad thing for you as they really pack a punch.

Thanks for the replies, I think studio monitors is the way to go for me. I've been delving into the Behringer range a bit more, and I think I might go for them. I'll get the best monitors from the Truth range, and depending on how I get on with them, the matching sub woofer. As for the mixer, I think I'm going to go for the EURORACK PRO RX1202FX. It has plenty of inputs, and has a mic pre-amp, for all of my recordings for radio and singing. I'll write back later on how I am going to connect it all. Cheers, Chris.
 
hmm, designed by mackie or designed by behringer, I know which I would rather, the tapcos are better mate and for only 30 quid or so more, but up to you at the end of the day

I'm not able to look them up at the moment, but I will a bit later when I get a chance. I'll take your word for it, do they do a subwoofer to match? I will be keeping this setup for quite a while once I get it, so I want it to be decent to start off with.

Right, the setup.

I'll be getting a large desk soon for my room, which will hold the DJ equipment and the main PC screens, keyboard etc. On the left hand side will be the DJ equipment, and the EURORACK PRO RX1202FX mixer. All the cabling is at the rear, and I will make it fully flush with the desk top [cut a hole in the desk :D] I will run the left and right outputs from the main PC into channel one, and the same outputs from the DJ gear into channel two. I will run any other gear I get [CD player, FM receiver etc] into the remaining channels. I will run the main out of the desk into the mic port on the main computer, and the record out of the desk into the DJ computer [so I can record my sets to each computer] I will run the remaining output of the desk into the speakers, or into the sub woofer depending on whether I end up getting one [I think I will, who wouldn't? :D] And the headphones will run off of the headphone out of the desk.

This is the basic setup so far, I think it will do me fine. Opinions welcome, Chris.
 
yes they do a woofer, its the tapco sw-10

mackie are the best in the game, and the price reflects this, if youre on a budget, then you cannot get better than their budget range, the tapco's

I've had the chance to look at the Tapco range and read a few reviews, and they sound amazing [no pun intended]

I'll go for the S5's, but if my budget allows it [got some very well paid gigs coming up soon] then I'll go for the S8's instead. One review said they are not great for clubby type music, but I think they were reviewed without the subwoofer. Has anyone got a first hand experience with the Tapco range? [probably a stupid question since you're all saying they're good :P]

I would never buy Behringer monitors, but that's my opinion!
I have a pair of KRK Rokit 6's for my studio setup and they're fantastic, definitely consider the KRK Rokit range if you can.
 
i have tapco s8's, i mix with them, drum and bass, jungle and old skool, cant get more clubby than that, i have a woofer and they are amazingly loud, crystal clear monitors producing totaly unbiased sound, if you want heavy bass, you need to get a woofer with any monitor as the idea of them is to hear how the producer intended, not necessarily chest thumping bass

maccy i think if hes looking at getting s5's then krk are out of his price range, the decent krk's are at least 100 quid more than the tapco s8's

although ebay is your friend, i saw a sw10 woofer going for 100 quid the other week, absolute bargain
 
I have to say I do love the S8 monitors and I've worked with many monitors over the years. I had a demo of almost every monitor in the shop when I got these ones and even had them set up alongside the Mackie's and they are easily as good. I can't recommend them enough. I would go with the S8 over the S5 though. The difference in the low end is worth the extra. I do have a sub although don't need to use it with the S8's as their low end is pretty impressive. ;)
 
9 times out of 10, a subwoofer isn't actually needed - most of it is down to the acoustics in the room. If you place some foam pads under the speakers, that's a big start. Then adding bass traps to the corners of the room can help too. It's a cheaper alternative to adding a subwoofer and most of the time it's just as good, if not better.
 
thats very true if youre setting up a studio, does make a big difference, i, on the other hand, like to push extreme amounts of bass lol

I listen to basically every genre [I'm a DJ, kinda have to have a liking for everything] from System Of A Down, to rap and R&B, to funk etc. I work at a radio station, so I'm always editing interviews, making jingles and stuff like that. I will be cranking them up a lot of the time too, can they take a bit of a beating once in a while? Cheers, Chris.
 
they are near field monitors, but in a room in your house, they go amazingly loud, i could never turn mine up full, no way, you would end up with tinitus, i dont know about the s5's though, 8 inch woofer is my minimum size i would buy

Behringer are a budget brand and the monitors aren't anything to write home about... They make good crossovers and EQ's tho...

If you want something that will sound decent then pick up some genelec 8040a's or some mackie hr824's. :)
 
Sorry to thread highjack. I'm also after some monitors for my room setup for producing. Anyone recommend me any for less than £100?
