Age of Conan - 7 day free trial

The world is instanced but more often than not there is only one, maybe two, up of any given zone (48 player limit iirc) - so nothing that will effect your gameplay its not as if every zone in something like wow was teeming with 100s of players... its linear to 20, then 20-50 you have a lot of choice in where you quest, then goes a bit linear again.

DX10 is implemented on live also.

So two zones up at 48 player max so that 96 players only in one zone? Sounds a little low population to me.

I can't understand how hard it is to have everyone in the zone there and available it makes the world feel alive. 10 year old+ games can do it so why can't a new one?

good review, sounds promising.

I'm going to start on the fury pvp server I think (either that or the rp-pvp server). I may try a tempest of set to begin with as that's what I was originally going to play before the game was released.

all the healing classes are weak for the first 20-30 levels but they become extremely strong at end game

Yeah, that is one thing that irks me about class choice in this, the first 40-50 levels are in no way an indicator of what a class is like, which is a very steep ramp to climb to find out whether you like it or not and I seriously mean that, most class won't become apparent to what their real role will be until 40+.

Some classes are awesome from the get go, but dissipate towards the end leading people to cry buff on them only to fail to realise they were just horribly OP for the last 70+ levels, you will spot these early on as you will either:
a) be one and be finding PvP very easy and wondering why everyone complains about ganking
b) be another class and be getting killed a lot by the same 2 classes :)

Won't spoil the fun on which they are :D

I'm playing on the Fury pvp server, I had it on release but quit due to bugs, but a few weeks ago I started playing again after trying out Warhammer Online which made me realise how good AOC was aside from the bugs. Now that the majority of the bugs have been fixed its a damn good game.

Depends on the zone of course, the more popular zones will have many instances - I mean on average across the board you will just get a couple tops of any particular zone.

Plus 48 is actually quite a lot of people to be running around a zone, if you're in a full instance of one then you will definetly be seeing players everywhere and at every quest, to answer the rest here is a quote from a dev (taken from AoC forums:

"While technically nothing is 'impossible' given enough time, resource and money this something you will not see.

Our game world is instanced to various degrees for a number of reasons, some game-play related and some to do with visual quality. It was a very conscious decision to go this route and isn't something that will change. Making a 'seamless' world would be making a new game entirely pretty much. I think it's down to a subjective individual opinion as to whether it is 'better' or 'worse', to some users the benefits that being instanced bring us will outweigh the possible benefits of having a 'seamless' world, to others it won't.

As with all things MMO, there are many different opinions out there as to which is 'best' and which people 'prefer'. I think there are pros and cons to both approaches and we went with the one that we thought would provide us with the most long-term benefits."

Might try this again some point in the next few months if Ulduar/3.1 patch for WoW isn't all it's cracked up to be; I genuinely tried to like Conan when it came out, but I stopped playing about 6-8 months after release because I just became so dispirited at the grinding, poor overall performance etc
If performance has gone up a lot, and the game is essentailly now more fun to play, I might just have to give it a fresh run. My conqueror is probably needing some love, especially after all the changes.

The trial isn't limited, its as far as you can get in the 7-14 days or however long it is (at least that is what a dev said in a video interview I was just watching) - now they have a game to show off past lvl20, they want to ;)

well the full game comes on two DVD's and takes over 25gig once installed !!

i hope its been trimmed for the trial

Welcome to the free 7 day trial of Age of Conan. Get ready for the most savage, sexy and brutal MMO ever created! The 7 days of free playtime will start from the first time you log into the game. Please note that trial accounts have some restrictions to them, the most noticeable are inability to trade with others, restrictions to use public channels, inability to post on forums and inability to send in-game mail. All these restrictions are lifted once you upgrade your account to the full version of the game.

The client you are about to download contains everything you require to start playing the game. Through the patcher you may elect to download the rest of the game at your own convenience. This is not needed before you reach level 20.

To continue playing after the trial period, you must purchase the full game. This is available for only €19.99 / £17.99 including VAT and includes an additional 30 days gametime.

IMPORTANT: Please ensure that you have selected the correct version of the game as the EU version will not work on the US servers.

The client is 13gb with a further 4gb(approx) to go before you can play

A friend of mine just bought this for £5... thats cheaper than what it cost me to resub :/

For £5 (with a free month) I would just ignore the trial tbh and go for it! :)

Same as above really, If you've never played an MMO before then you'd probably love leveling after 20 because it's a grind like WoW. It is a good game and probably gets even better at 70 but it takes too long to level up.

Definitely worth the first month of play though.

The levelling in Conan is stupidly quick

I enjoy AoC, but in all honesty at low levels it does seem like your playing Oblivion just online with... a few people.

I'm an Officer and part of a big guild on Skullcrusher by the way, we're called The Soul Collectors. :)

It's a group of dedicated members that have been together through a few MMO's and we're in a lot of other games as well. Me and the leader have met a few times for beers, and are going out partying next weekend... then we have a BIG guild meet in Sweden in the summer
