Old Raleigh Rce Bike ??

I remember the Raleigh Record, I fancied one but ended up getting a Peugeot something or other which had 501 tubing instead.

Out of interest why do you want one of them now? You could probably get a better performing and newer bike for similar money.
You say that but I've got a mid 80's 501 tubed Raleigh that I rag the hell out of. I was thinking of replacing it because it uses a lot of obsolete parts but even in the £1500 range I still haven't found a bike that's as light or that I'd be happy leaving chained up anywhere. I was quite surprised.

Any problem fitting new wheels etc to old Raleigh frames? Was thinking maybe axel sizes have changesd over the years as well as other things.

Do you know what model your Raleigh is ??

No, but the gear system and rear hub is different these days so if you replace either a wheel or the gears you have to replace both or do a little mod. New cassette gears can be fitted to an old wheel with a small modification but not the other way round.

I wish I knew. Picture of it in its original paint:

Gave it a quick lick of TLC and now it looks like this:

Since then i've chopped and flipped the handlebars as well.

Nice job I know who to come to for advice now ;) really like the tyres finish it off :)

Duh, I feel a bit dim now... :D

Raleigh Strada A350 Ensemble on closer inspection. Hurrah for megapixels :D

do you remeber Z rims ?? think that is what they were called you could bend them almost in half and they went back again

Yes mate they were called Z Rims, we either had those or the Tuff 2's. The Skyway's would go in the freezer to straighten them IIRC whereas the Z Rims would just spring back:D

Those were the days

I spotted that too. Looks like a pretty well spec'd bike and it weighs nothing, got to wonder what a pro bike was like with full-on 531 forks as well.

Nice bike oj62 :)

What are those tyres?

They are Vittoria Rubino Pro tyres.

Yeah no worries... just remembered, the other mod i had to do was change the stem. The frame is just a little to big for me, and so i was a bit stretched out, so got a shorter stem. I'll get some new pics when i get a mo.

Bringing this thread back from the dead as I'm back home for a few days and I got the bike out the shed, it was a Raleigh Record Sprint, aside from the tyres being flat I just needed to oil the chain and it was good to go again which is more than can be said for my Kona Stinky - one tyre had the valve disintegrate from the tyre on being pumped up and the replacement flatted itself instantly, not to mention that the discs have closed on slightly but that isn't a big deal and can be sorted.

//edit I think I paid about £45 from a car boot sale for the Raleigh about 4 or 5 years ago.
