Q6600 Should I aim for 3.6 or 3.2?

A 3.6ghz Q6600 will be able to throw mostly anything that's thrown at it for quite a long time yet

I have my heart set on the asus maximus II.

So after weeks and weeks of reading and researching i stumbled across this site HERE! :)

So basically i have found that with my RAM
(Crucial tracer memory 800MHz 4-4-4-12)

I should set a 1:2 ratio and aim for an FSB of 400. this will get my ram running at its default speeds and give it the best theoretical peak bandwidth and some sexy CL4 latencies :D.

But Im a bit worried about multipliers... With a x9 i will be hitting 3.6GHz
Is this even possible? I know every chip is different.

I used to have an old MSI P45 Platinum. I couldn't for the life of me get it stable at that frequency. It would go for weeks and then out of the blue ;) BSOD on me....

Prime temps were never above 65 which i was happy with. I think i had a high vcore running through it... 1.45? maybe? i cant remember.

But anyway i was told it was my ram causing the faults and so i got a refund and it replaced. with the 800Mhz stuff instead of the 1066. (thank you crucial).

BASICALLY among all the crap i have told you lol.

1. is the asus board from OCUK (where else ;)) gonna be able to hit those frequencies with ease?
2. Is 3.6GHz a too optimistic clock speed to be aiming for?
3. Should i drop the multiplier to 8 and make to with 3.2GHz?

Thanks a million for all the replies. Everyone of you are all legends!

Cheers and take care.

If you want 3.6Ghz then whack 1.48-1.50 thru it until stable. It's a 65nm Conroe after all. So that would be 9x400 with 1:1 ratio with your RAM. If you want 3.2Ghz then you do it with a less vCore around 1.4 I guess.

The draw back of running @ 3.6Ghz is the higher watt consumption of the system and does lessen the life of your CPU a little. If you're not running 24/7 then it's fine to run @ 3.6Ghz. Anyway, good luck and hope this helps.

I think i will be running 24/7 so maybe 3.6 isnt a good idea... *strokes stubble*

Why is it a 1:1ratio with the RAM? will that give me 800MHz? (its been so long since i did any of this, basically a new system build with a few old parts like the ram and cpu)

Cheers

Whats the vid of your q6600, a lot of the current quads are poor overclockers, lucky to get 3.3-4ghz out of them, mine isnt to bad for a late chip, 3.6ghz on 1.4 vcore, 1.50625 for 3.8ghz.

Download coretemp, it will show you the VID of the chip. VID is what the mobo will set vcore to automatically to run at stock speed.

Also, what ASUS mobo do you have?

EDIT - and also, I am going against my own quote, as I'm only running mine at 3ghz. (can't do 1600fsb as my board need to be watercooled. I can run 3.6ghz, but need to get water on this baby).

Mine needs 1.52 in BIOS (1.59 reported vcore to run stable at 3.6ghz. 3.2ghz needs around 1.4vcore, however, yours might be different.)

I'll Find out when i get my rig up and running.

At the minute all i have is the CPU RAM and an old coolermaster PSU... I think i might get the 750 be quite one...

but yes the asus board i havent got it yet but here is the link.

Board

Should be able to run 400 x 8 quite easily on that board. Also, if you're going to overclock, what is your cpu cooler? And also, what case? because if you've got a recent Q6600, you might have to pump a lot of volts for 3.6ghz and if so, I have to stress watercooling, but 3.2ghz is do able on air. Also, case is important as you'll need good airflow to cool your mobo down.

I'm sorry if this advice is too easy or simple, just trying to cover everything I can think of.

and also this computer is only gonna be used like a gaming system. Apart from the odd word file. I just need it to be on the bleeding edge of gaming performance

Where in norn iron mate? aside from that i can reassure you, the p5q deluxe is an awesome overclocking board, when a noob clocker like me can take a q6600 to 3.8ghz (luckily i got a good cpu) theres hope for anyone. Its a very easy board to oc on, nice simple bios layout, and the p45 chipset runs nice and cool as well.:)

Ok then i will take the P5Q but there is the question of memory frequency then. You took yours to 3.8GHz meaning a 423 fsb?

How will that work with memory at 1:1 i dont wanna touch this memory frequency...

lol What am i on about... Seeing your clock speed makes me want more.. This is like a bloody addiction!

Right 400*9 it is. on the P5Q

Armoy mate up near the north coast, i ran the q6600 at 423 fsb, ram at that time was ocz reaper 800mhz, ran it at 422 ddr, voltage of 2.02 (ram is rated at 2.1, but p5q boards overvolt by 0.08v), ive since moved to ocz reaper 8500, btw aries i recently done a bit of work up at mosely council office, which is in newton abbey, nice part of the world.
