NEW NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 275 GRAPHICS CARDS READY TO SHIP AT OcUK

I'll wait for some user reviews first. Once all the hype finally settled about the 4870 512mb and it's ability to post faster benchmarks than even the gtx280 at the time (yeah I'm sure you all remember the armchair expert 'its all down to ati's superior texture compression' crap :p) it came to light that not only did the gtx280 offer a much better gaming experience, but the gtx260 did as well. So you'll forgive me if I wait a little while to form my opinions on this round of cards.

That is true about the texture compression though but I will admit that 512mb wasn't quite enough for the 4870 especially at high res in which case the GTX280 was king.

I have just moved from an 4870 512mb to a GTX260 216 and I have noticed the gpu ram used in GTA4 has increased considerably on the GTX260 at the same settings.

In fact I can only run it at slightly higher graphics settings than my 4870 did despite having 384Mb more ram. I was expecting at 1680 x 1050 that I would have being able to turn everything to max without running out of gpu memory so I was a bit disappointed. By my calculations you need 1gb of ram with a Nvidia card and about 750Mb with an ATI card to run at max settings.

Which does mean that a 1gb ATI has more memory headroom (for want of a better phrase ) than a 1gb Nvidia card.

Has anyone noticed how it takes longer for ATI cards to load games versus NVidia? Crysis and COD load twice as fast on my GTX260 than they did on my 4850 and 4870, no matter the settings used. Perhaps this is the cost of "superior" (read higher) compression algorithms.

WHo make better drivers? I am going to order next week.
They are very similar. I find NVidia Control Panel simpler to navigate, but ATI has a nifty Overdrive feature which allows "free" low level overclocking. It is hard to pick a clear winner.

If only, sadly at 1680x1050 i cant run GTAIV full whack either, seems to require around 1.5GB to max out every option.

Okay I will revise that then. 1.5Gb on a Nvidia card and just over 1gb on an ATI card? ANybody with a 1gb 4870 at 1680 x 1050 like to confirm/deny this?

Been playing with mine since yesterday now, tried off the bat to match GTX285 settings and its running more then fine so far. Idle temp is 31, load temp is 52.
Gonna see if i can push it a bit more later, but to be fair .. simply matching makes it a bargain for its price relative to the 285.
