Hai all! Remember nearly a month ago I created this thread? Well, yesterday afternoon I received a call, saying I got the year placement =D. So damn chuffed about it!

I'll be working at GlaxoSmithKline in the technical operations dept in London. Still to receive further details about the job in the next week but I was literally bouncing off the walls yesterday. Best news I've had in a long time! It was my first *proper* interview which went really well, managed to shake off the nerves. I'm really looking forward to this year placement as well as experiencing London living!

Just want to thanks everyone that's advised me on here, so many invaluable archive posts on here too, and also to the people who contributed to that shirt and tie combo thread, especially the guy who said I would look like an icecream van man :D. Also, a bit 1UP to dark_shadow, what a legend! Beats university careers service hands down! :)

Well done. I'm currently going through interviews for my placement year. Only had one interview so far, all the rest are for later in the month.

What level of salaries do placements usually provide? (Im at Uni btw - I'm not just plain nosey!)

me227 - Thanks, just keep on trying and prepare as much as possible for your interviews. Hit me up if you need any help, I'll try the best I can :)

MattandJett - Usually an average of 15k

Not bad, it'll help a bit towards the final year of Uni too. I don't think I have an option for a placement on my degree course, but then doing a science like biology, Im not sure what you would do!

Heh, I don't think Bio and similar sciences allow for placements. If you do not have a sandwich course, you wont officially be able to take a placement, and you're right, I've never seen anywhere advertising for Science based internships  (maybe i haven't looked enough!)

Not that it bothers me, because I want to apply for graduate schemes with the top100 - with 90% of them all asking for a degree in any disipline - therefore allowig me to do a degree I like (Bio)

Not if he has to pay for his accommodation, £15k doesn't go very far in London, at all! But academically yep, a placement makes a massive difference to ones final year.

congrats on the placement, good company too GSK.

One year placements are usually a fair bit less pay compared to 6/8 week placements.

An example:
A year placement with a Big Four accounting firm would net you around £10,000 (£194 a week) after tax in the North. An 8 week placement would get you around £18,500 a year (£355 + holiday pay). No tax due to the less than PA earnings.

Congrats! I also have a placement starting end of June for GSK based in Stevenage :) Just going through the process of trying to sort out a house now. Are you in GSK house?

Yeah, just concentrate on finding a good graduate scheme, and get in there as early as possible!

Thanks Kol! You are right, 15k and I have to pay for accomodation. It won't go very far, but really I'm not too bothered about the pay. Just as long as I can survive and afford to buy a few luxuries, I don't mind! :D

Congratulations :)

Thanks nitefly! I'm sure I saw a thread or a few threads of yours which helped to advise me for the interview ;)

Really!?!? Congrats! ;) I'm going to be at the big GSK House, absolutely LOVE the place to bits. Will you be attending the induction on June the 10th at GSK House? Or will you be having a separate induction in Stevenage? What's your role?

Is that the huge new office complex in Brentford on the Great West Road?

I'm not sure about the induction, haven't been told to go but I may get further details, not sure. All I know is that I'm starting end of June. I'm in the IT dept and working as business analysis/project management things, so I'm not 100% sure but should be fun:p

Ah, yes. I didn't get the placement, thanks for reminding me :( :p

Aww! Sorry to hear that! Did you get anything else afterwards?

Sure is :D It's as amazing inside as it looks like on the outside! :o

Okay, would be cool if OCUK crew could meet up! :D Ah! Sounds cool! Congrats on getting it! I take you you had your interview at GSK house?
