Accepting money to fix a work mate/ friend's computer?

I have done these kind of favours for friends for ages, its really annoying and has to stop. Some bloke I hadnt spoken to in 2 years rung me up a few months ago asking if i can help sort his computer problems out.... Just because I did it for free once.

We're talking about friends here. Not someone you've not spoken to for 2 years.

Did i say anywhere in my post that I did this? I would quite happily go and make my dinner whilst XP loading, just the fact that when its finished IE after 30 mins, you still have work to do to set it all up, fine tune it, drivers, updates(including SP3),restore users data, applications, do final disk cleanup, defrag etc....

A chef/mechanic does not click buttons to get something done.
You click buttons and then the installer package does all the work for you.

Your being an idiot I'm sorry, in all my years I've never meet someone with such a warped view of computer repairs, just counting the individual times that you have to sit in front of the system is the stupidest thing I've ever heard, these people are not paying just for your time (which is set by the hour in the real world), they are also paying for your skills.

You said XP takes 30mins to install.
Does that take 30min of your time?

No.

Windows update/Defrag/Cleanup etc. can be set to auto/schedule. You don't have to do these things on the day you fix the computer.

Again, its not a skill.

Err, so this fine tune thing, what is it? You don't have to tell them how to install applications, they already know. Show them where their backed up files are. Teach them how to defrag their own drive. Leave them a folder on their desktop with other stuff they need to install.

Even better. Teach your friend all this stuff instead of thinking you're a computer whizz. Then they won't have to ask you the next time.

Why would you sit on front of the computer waiting 30 mins for it to install?
Do something else and go back when its done.

do you normally get said friend to bring the whole pc around then as most of my friends expect a house visit normally.

In which case Im round theirs and not able to do something else.

the 2 year person was just an example of utter cheek of which I didnt respond to, did you not get that from my post?

I agree with him completely. Most of the time installing stuff on a computer is waiting, same with scanning. You're supposedly at your friends house, talk to each other, drink a beer, explain what you're doing, watch tv. etc.

Have a beer, go on the xbox, do something social, why sit in front of the computer watching it install?

Im sorry but if i wiped someone's pc and gave it back to them without installing the software that they used originally they would think iv done half a job and not pay me.

I do agree that most of the time its just "waiting" but at the end of the day I could be out round my mates house or down the pub having fun. Like I said If i do it for free then I wouldnt go out my way and would do it in my own time when I have time, if people were going to pay me then I would go out the way and happily help them out.

And there is also that fact that if for free, always expect it as free

Clicking Next, Ok, Finish is not a skill.

Your taking things out of context and your being very very pedantic, they are not paying for you just to click next or finish, they are paying for you to complete the whole job which requires you to set-up the system correctly which is something that 'they' (the costumer/friend/collogue) does not understand how to do, which is why they are coming to you to use your skills to fix the problem.

well I normally use that time to hunt for the drivers on another machine as i said in my post above.....
Trying to get things done as quickly as possible so I can go back home/to doing what ever I was doing before.

It's this thing called friendship.

No we're not just talking about friendship. The OP was also talking about colleagues, people who aren't that good a friends... and the disucssion led form there. Apparently only you seem to be talking "just" about family and best friends, which is probably why you're making such an arse out of yourself.

I think every single person who has answered here has made the comparison between friend and acquaintance. I'm talking about teaching friends basic computer skills instead of acting like you're gods gift to windows xp.

From my perspective the only person making an ass out of themselves is you with your unfortunate school brat attitude.

If you want to charge your friends to do a monkey job, I can't stop you from doing that.

Goodbye.

From post #8 the discussion led to charging friends to fix a computer.
The only people making an arse of themselves are the one who expects to be paid to help your friend with such a simple task.

Unfortunate school brat? Interesting terminology. I think we'll just have to agree to disagree. You can live in cloud cuckoo land... i'll live in the real world... and we'll all live happily ever after. :D
