Hi guys, a little help please.

Dad went to turn on his PC but nothing happens, no lights, no anything. Its about 7 years old, usually on all the time but doesn't do much apart from office type stuff and email. Has been very reliable up until this point.

Tried changing the fuse in the plug but that didn't work.

Apparently last week the PC was making a funny beeping noise whilst idle. This has happened a couple of times, restarting the PC had fixed the problem.

Any idea's what the problem could be? Perhaps PSU or memory?? I don't know how to go about diagnosing the problem, any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks.

We had a similar problem, and it turned out to be a faulty PSU. My guess is thats why it was beeping too.

Yeah sounds like psu is culprit. even if it was the ram, you should srill be able to hear it trying to power on, or see some lights or something.

Pull the side panel off and check to see if the motherboard power LED is lit. If you are sure everything is connected properly (mains, ATX cable etc) and it is not lit then your PSU has gone.

Thanks guys. Dad may take this opportunity to upgrade his PC i.e. replace it.

Am i right in assuming it will be quite easy to recover the data on the hard drive by getting a caddy and usb (from overclockers ofc), and have it as a mobile disk drive?

If your hard drive is still servicable then all you need to do is plug it into your new machine as a slave and just copy the data from it.
