Hi guys, the craic is the missus and I are going travelling soon (end of june) for a few months and we need a reliable, cheap to run car for the meantime that will happily munch the motorway miles as she does around 100 miles a day to work and back.

The budget is around £1000 but can stretch a couple more hundred if needs be.

So, recommendations?

thanks.

Maybe look at old Volvo's of some sort? Lots of them are 1 owner, comprehensively serviced and been treated with mechanical sympathy for their whole life and i have first hand experience of how reliable and tough these car's are

volvo, saab, vauxhall

volvo like gaygle said...good good good tanking cars :D

probs get an s40 off autot**** for 1k

There are 2 mondeo's 2000 V/W reg 2.0 tdci 115 within my budget, what if any costly repairs can happen with these?

(Both in the range of 120-140,000 miles btw)

There's a few 306's on too, nothin in the way of volvo. Defo leaning towards diesel since shes doing 500 miles a week for work and we can rack up another 200 on the weekend easy.

I did see a couple of 406's, I've never really considered them due to their somewhat dated look tho.

406 HDIs look dated yes, but they can be very economical on motorway runs, prob squeeze 55-60mpg and you'll get a lot of kit (climate etc). They are unloved by punters hence cheap and ideal for your requirments.

ill put it to the missus, didnt quite realise they'd be that economical.

The same as any of the common rail diesels; injectors, high pressure pumps and turbos will all leave a very big hole in your wallet if they fail.

I very much doubt you will get a genuine 60 mpg out of a 406 unless you are really trying. The combined figure for the 2.0 HDI common rail engine is 49mpg, and they are usually optimistic.

TDCi mondeo's have a nasty flywheel eating habbit. Mine just went and cost £650 for a new flywheel and clutch. However, at that mileage theres a good chance it's been dont already.

I had a 406 TD as a courtesy car yesterday and I was quite impressed, good interior bulb quality (for French) and drives very well. Even with 180k on the clock.

But I'd still say Mondeo. ;)

Xantia 2.0 HDI to add something to the mix?

Unsure if they have issues at higher mileages though...
