Spec me a wide angle lens for canon 400D

I have a canon 400D SLR camera and have the kit lens (~17-55mm), 50mm 1.8 and a okish 75-200mm lens.

I think I need a wider angle lens as I am going sailing soon and it should produce some nice pics. What lens would people recommend. Is the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Lens worth £600?

Is it worth £600 ??? I don't think so, the recent price hike pushed it from around £400 to £600. It's a decent lens for £400, but for £600, that's more than what i paid for my 16-35mm 2.8 !
 
I know, stupid exchange rates. I wanted to get a wide angle before my holiday in 2 weeks time but at this rate I might just have to make do with the 50mm and the kit lens :(
 
I've got the 10-22mm, although I got it for £405 a while back now with a cashback offer. It's a fantastic lens and easily gets the most use out of all of my lenses. Also you might want to consider the Sigma 10-20mm or the Tamron 11-18mm or if you are considering going full frame at some point in the future you might want to look at the Sigma 12-24mm.

Also there is a popular high street retailer selling the 10-22mm for £518.71, although it's out of stock right now it seems.
 
Also consider the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, it's great on paper though I've read of sample variation.
 
If you're on a budget and don't mind risking second hand then look at the Sigma 10-20. I picked mine up, mint and sharp as tack, for £250. Absolutely amazing lens for the price.

Yeah definately take a closer look at this one, I've been following someone on flickr who has one and the shots look great. If I didn't have my Sigma 10-20mm I'd be buying the Tokina. That wide aperture opens a lot of doors, remember the 1/focal length camera-shake rule...with wide angles that means you can be sharp at 1/10s or more, and that with f2.8 could be awesome for low-light walkabouts without tripod hassle.

I also have the 'old' Sigma, and now there's also the upcoming Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5...the aperture gain of itself isn't a huge gain, but the extra aperture blade is appealing :|
 
I might go for the tokina then, its over £100 less and whilst the optics probably won't be as good as the canon it should do the job well and avoid me having to lug a tripod around as much.
I take it the Tokina ATX 116 PRO DX AF11-16mm F/2.8 Canon will fit the 400d fine and will AF work?
Would a Tiffen 77mm Circular Polariser Filter work fine as well (going to be some serious glare coming from the carribean :)

Just picked up a Sigma 10-20mm EX DG HSM for £379* (along with my brand spanking new 50D :)) Haven't had long to play with it yet, but from the few practice shots I've done with it's a fantastic piece of kit: 10mm is extremely wide (even on a cropped sensor) and build quality is second to none. Had an old Sigma 70-300mm APO which was a fairly useless piece of glass in all honesty, but this has totally swung my opinion of Sigma back the other way.

*Reason is was a decent price was that is was "old stock" (ie. pre-price hike) from a local chain. A larger national chain in the same town was selling the lens out at £450. Whichever lens you decide to go for I'd suggest you try to check out your local suppliers as there definitely are some good bargains still to be had if you have a bit of luck.

I've got the Sigma 10-20. Not really used it much due to being busy with uni work but it seems great. Looking forward to putting it to some use over the summer. My 30mm tends to be on the camera most of the time :p
 
Decisions decisions, do I go for the sigma 10-20mm or the faster tokina?
I have the 17-50 kit lens so If I go for the tokina I am only missing the 10mm wide angle offered by the sigma.
 
Another Sigma 10-20mm user here

Reasonably sharp as long as you can get a decent copy. You also need to shoot around F8 a well

Call me mad but as attractive as f/2.8 sounds, on such a wide lens it's unlikely to see much use. Go with a Nifty Fifty f/1.8 @ £80 if you want a good low-light lens, and stick with the Sigma for wide work.
