Does anyone know what those black camera are mounted on posts that hang over roads? They look like specs, but they aren’t painted yellow, I’ve searched around and I simply cannot see anything about them..

It’s the first time I’ve seen spec type cameras on the same type of posts but not painted yellow but black.

I saw them entering the road, and saw another post the same leaving the same area, but the post was new and no cameras yet on the post I saw leaving the area. Northampton Brackmills area. Not seen them before, or even seen the type of camera before..

Possible ANPR? Traffic claming cameras? Not sure.

hanging on bridges over roads ?

they're just used by the highways agency for monitoring traffic.

and yes the men with tinfoil hats say they are all getting ANPR technology and used to create a massive surveilance network, but not yet.

I just remember watching road wars and it saying that the police were chasing after an uninsured/wanted driver after the CCTV camera picked it up with its ANPR.

I think I saw the same episode. This was the London cameras, some of which do have ANPR.

i think i know the ones you mean. They were put up along every route into canterbury about 12 months ago. I'm sure they're just traffic monitoring ones, but it's made me think - some of the roads they are placed down aren't ever busy with traffic...

I'm sure they could easily be used as ANPR surveillance cameras for certain organisations.

@jbstans

The average speed cameras would have a lot of signs warning you about it. Having travelled down the bit of the A14 with them I can safely say it'd be pretty obvious if they were average speed ones.

thats just it

they can do. Currently there arent, but if th tabloids are to believed, there will be a nationwide network of them. Currently as already said its just the london ones that have it.

I agree, but there is no denying they are potentially "laying the groundwork" and with the paranoia of terrorism recently, it's by no means a stretch of the imagination for ANPR to be extended to these cameras in the future.

Aah, true.. I hadn't thought of that. Yeah it's probably not that then..
