Low-Beam at night, legal?

I thought sidelights were parking lights and only to be used when parking on the wrong side of the road

Parking lights only light up one side of the car normally and are activated by leaving the indicator stalk directing to the side you want to light(on most cars) with the ignition off.

No, sidelights are sidelights for use when daylight is at slightly reduced levels.
Ahh, ok

Something I never knew (probably something to do with the cars I've driven)

A mighty 5 watts if I remember rightly!

I have four of them and it still wouldn't be good enough to see where I'm going at night

No, those are called parking lights. Many cars use the sidelights as parking lights hence the confusion. You use them when parking on an unlit NSL road (possibly also 40s and 50s, I can't remember). Parking on the wrong side of the road is illegal at all times (though no-one cares)

If you're driving in an area with streetlighting then it's ok to use just sidelights, this used to be quite common 30 or 40 years ago but these days everyone is all "OMG! must have as much light as possible, so that people can see me and not the motorbike in front of me or the pedestrian crossing the road behind me" and thus drives around with headlights on during the day.
