about time 4870x2 owners got third party cooling.

When I heard news that Arctic Cooling were making a cooler for the 4870 X2, I wet myself quite excitedly...however, waitin til May is not what I was hoping for...but that could be a good thing cos its my birthday next month anyway...so I got a reason to treat myself :D even tho I treat myself pretty much every month with new parts and what not :D OCuK you had better email me the second it falls thru your postbox :D

In the meantime, grab a zalman for £4, 4-8 zipties for 20p, take the shroud off your card, put in the over and gas mark 3 for 30 mins and out will pop a silently cooled 4870x2 for less than £5 and no waiting.

Gas mark 3? surely u need it slightly char grilled...I say gas mark 5...for the crisp effect...works for me everytime :D

I really don't understand why anyone is waiting, £5 ridiculously easy mod and silence now, or wait and spend £40-60 on a cooler that when you do finally get rid of your card, can't be used again and loses all value. Lets say you sell in two years, the card will have lost ridiculous value and you won't be able to charge more for the better cooler, as that extra cost will be the difference between card + cooler 2nd hand, and the price of a next gen card second hand with more performance.

While that £5 zalman fan, can go right back on the next card with another 20p's worth of zipties.

I said previously, if it was available on launch, or I could buy a different version with it preinstalled for £20 more I'd probably get it. But waiting to cool it properly and keep it quiet rather than silence it instantly for £5, its not even a choice IMHO.

hmmm

i might just go though with your idea, wouldnt 2 120mm fans work better than 1 ?
is there someone on OCUK or anywhere that has pictures or a guide of the proceedure i dont want to do this and break my card but i do want my card to stop going over 80c at full load wich at 100% fan at the minute it does

with the clocks i have if my card goes over 85c it starts to artifact and at 88c lockups lol
so for the time being i cant use my clocks and have to use default clocks on some games that take more juice...

i need to plan this out properly

you have to think though just how much better the cooling will actually be
becuse its the heatsink on the accelero that im waiting on the most not just the 3 fans on top of it its those uber heatpipes lol

i remember having there 8800GTX cooler and it was uber compaired to the stock.

I gave up and have 2 120mm Fans either side of the card (after removing the outer plastic covering and re-attaching the copper heat sink.

Lower temps and quiet too ;-).

Guys I have never fitted any type of cooler to a GPU before and just used the fan that comes with it. Is it very complicated from past experience to put this cooler on a 4870x2 ? just a case of unscrewing some screws and screwing the new one on ?

id guess around the 40 quid region, any more would be abit daft.

personally id like to see ocuk stocking a decent GTX260/280 cooler.
