15K for a car - options - Honda, Ford, BMW

That legacy would be an awful buy. Crap interior, heavy depreciation,
It's 2k over budget and has a 2l boxer diesel which is frankly horrid.
I am taking it you have driven one? Or is this a CLARKSON11!!!!121323432514 SAYZ ITS CRAPZ!!!!!!12312355994

The Mondeo isn't a depreciation haven, and these engines are pretty new so guessing depreciation is quite difficult at this stage.

Just buy option 3, the other 2 are not on the same page, really, they are a league below in terms of quality, ability, fun factor and general lovelyness.
I certainly wouldn't put the mondeo a league below the 5 series in the fun factor stakes.

I'm not going to sit here and argue why a BMW 530d will be better than the 2l diesel legacy. It's a no brainer really.

The boxer is missing the one obvious advantage of a diesel - torque.

Well that clears it then, you haven't driven one.

Get it and park it sideways into a tree. I'd love to get my hands on one of those boxer diesels for my Baja. :p

Anyone who spends 18k on a legacy would be a complete buffoon. I am not dismissing it but at that money the BMW is clearly the better buy.
It fulfills all the criteria bar maybe the second one.

It certainly exceeds the BMW when it comes to the third criteria (quality of drive). Much less wallowing and a much better drive!

Although 18k is a bit overpriced, I suggest he wait a few weeks for a few to hopefully appear closer to the budget.

When were the first diesel legacys made? Surely buying one further down the depreciation curve would be a better idea. That 18k will turn to 8k in no time.

To be fair, this is quite a hard thing to be able to gague as the model is too new. The cars are diesel (desirable) and few and far between (rare).

The reasons the petrols shed value is because they are unpopular, they are unpopular because they are petrol and thirsty. The diesels aren't.

For the hatchback I would personally go for an Alfa Brera, with the 'panoramic sunroof'. They are beautiful!

I have no idea what they are like to drive and own though =P

How about
subaru

Octavia?

Lexus (actually have something that will get you to your destination without fail, unlike BMW and Ford, also this may fall into the wallow category)

Personally I would find it hard to dismiss the Subaru, I am not sure why they are so underrated and overlooked.

subaru and Lexus i had not considered thanks :). the Octavia is not big enough, i also thought it was a saloon?

Merc E Class estate of some sort?

I was considering the e class actually, but the reviews all mention electrical issues in the earlier models, and, well its a bit boring no?
certainly i think i should reconsider and see what i can get at my price point :)

Ive added for the sake of clarity another criteria (and the main reason i need the bigger car) which is my rapidly growing daughter, and the need to have a pram and car seat in the car.

I doubt you could call a 525d estate fun. RWD doesn't instantly mean it's more fun (i'm sure an Integra would be more fun than a BMW diesel estate) :)

But for your average Joe, i'm sure FWD / RWD makes no difference to how much fun they have.

I haven't driven the new Mondeo or a 5 series, but I would definately take both out for extended test drives as I don't think the difference is as clear as it once was (other than the badge factor)
