Modified cars 'could put lives at risk'

Lives are being put at risk by young motorists who modify their cars to boost performance, says the AA.

The motoring organisation wants tighter controls for things like nitrous oxide kits which are used to massively increase an engine's power.

AA Chairman Edmund King says it's young motorists who are most at risk and he wants to see new rules about how much people can modify their cars.

What is it with the AA? they are paid by the motorist so surely you would think that they should operate in the interest's of motorist's? but they keep coming out with stupid things like this

Tbh it's not the power but the driver, the AA should be calling for better/scricter driving tests, but that dosen't get better headlines then "Ban it!!1"

We could learn from the Finn's they have to achieve thier test over 5 years driving is all conditions in FWD, RWD and AWD - I'm not suggesting something so scrict be implemented but even what's in the advanced driving tests could be incorperated simple things like learning how to park in all postitions, motorway introduction, merge in turn and how to use complex roundabouts are all missing.

They had this a while ago too. Nothing new. They do have a point when you look towards the burberry boiz and the cheapness of turbo jap stuff. Slap on some nitrous and natural selection comes home, its just a shame about innocents involved.

Yeah, the TG episode where they sent May off to learn to drive was brilliant. They have to do loads of tests in all sorts of conditions, and they have to learn to powerslide etc. / recover a slide. :)

This is why I want to take the car to a carlimits day (that doesn't cost £200! but is decent), so I can learn what to do in the event of something happening. I know the theory behind it all, and have recovered slides in both FWD and RWD cars, but still want to learn it properly so I can do a controlled recovery and not a hashed up one. :)

Poorly modified cars can be unsafe, modified cars aren't in general.

Cars don't kill people, idiots do, etc etc....

You can still take a 1 litre Fiesta and drive it headfirst into someone coming the other way at 60mph if you're so inclined. People like this are, for the most part, a lost cause...and how do you regulate something like this anyway?

Too early in the morning to think deep thoughts :p

exactly

lack of control is what makes cars unsafe, ie increasing speed without touching brakes / suspension / tyres

nitrous oxide kits

Oops - I guess I should remove the kit I started fitting to the Westfield last night.

On second thoughts, **** it - lets get it working by this weekend!

News article is stupid though - thos driver would have probably died in bog standard 1ltr Fiestas. It's like saying Ferrari's kill people. People kill people! Not cars, trains, guns, knives etc.

If i could afford a fast stock car id buy one... instead i buy a turbo jap car for £1000 and spend £1000 or so making it as fast and handle well like an expensive sports car. Doesn't look like the new car. The main thing it doesn't have that newer cars do is saftey equipment, other than that it performs the same, or at least can do with some more monies. Pointless really. Banning modifications would just mean you need more money for a fast car.

It'd also probably make people realise they can buy a faster car off the shelf, than ploughing X amount into some other car instead......thus do nothing anyway :p

I agree with them to a point. The majority of modified cars are done by people who don't really understand anything about engineering or what makes a car handle just bolting on a bunch of off the shelf parts and hoping for the best. Then of course are the ones who like to increase the performance of their engine without any consideration for the suspension/braking/tyres.

what makes me rofl copter even more is that the guy said he'd spent £15k on his mr2. I mean, seriously, WTF? Could have bought an E46 M3 for that and actually had some respect.

The guy is a member of the forums. ;)

The thing is, mods are done over a period of time, so you don't realise how much you've spent till you look back on it.

If you didn't spend the money on mods over the years, it'd be spent elsewhere, so you wouldn't be able to get the M3. :)

In what way would an old model M3 command more 'respect' than a nice old MR2? Good old Ocuk Jap prejudice at work, I love it so ;)

Believe it or not, not everyone wants an M3.

ive probably spent an extra 2k ontop of my orignal 9k for my FiestaST. which means i could have got a more expensive car.... But i didnt HAVE that extra 2k when i was buying the car. Its the odd 100 quid here or there and it slowly adds up. Plus its fun ;)

how many people really stick n2o kits on there cars? this guy just watched fast and furious at the cinema and thought holy crap lets jump on a bandwagon before everyone melts there engines and does all these crazy stunts they see in the film down the m1!

lets ban liquid nitrogen because people are stealing fuel trucks with it like in teh film!

Don't want to sound insensitive but the women just on Radio 1 talking about her son that died doing 70 in a 30 limit... I just want to slap her, what on earth has lowered suspension and gull wing doors got to do with doing 70mph? And since when do you need nitrous to get to 70?!

I liked the bit about the 'boy racer on the motorway'. Oh yeah, because reps in their Mondeo or Audi never get a bit pedal happy do they?

Another 'ZOMG young driver' attack :( (ok, I'm 23 but I look about 17 driving a car that fits the stigma perfectly :p)

arknor, were you talking about the guy in the video? I suggest you read the 2nd post in the thread ;)
